DISC Platinum Rule Assessment and Workplace Observation
MGT/307

The DISC Platinum Rule Assessment discusses four different dimensions of behavior. Each person has a combination of these behaviors, but will have strong connections to one of the four dimensions. The assessment determines which of these behaviors are most prominent in a person’s personality and also a substyle that more specifically determines the DISC style. Direct behaviors are obvious. These behaviors include constant eye contact, emphatic statements and opinions, firm handshakes, and competitiveness. Indirect behaviors are not quite as obvious and include patience, gentle handshakes, and more reserved actions. Open behaviors

Several in our group disagree with the assessment that states that Impresser behavior includes disorganization, although some agree that we may be perceived as disorganized even though we are not. Weaknesses for the Dominance Style include impatience, acting insensitive, taking oneself too seriously, and poor listening skills. Although these behaviors are considered weaknesses for this team, they have not been exhibited in this online team environment. Strengths for the Dominance Style include high energy, leadership, administration, and juggling (The Platinum Rule, 2012). Communication is a strong characteristic in both the Interactive and Dominance styles and this is prevalent in our team. The discussion in this team has been optimistic and several team members help to motivate others to get the work done and offer assistance when needed. The team believes that most of these strengths are accurate. The difficulties that can arise within this group relate to workflow interdependencies. This happens when individuals or groups have to rely on others to provide assistance to help achieve a goal (Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn, 2008). These interdependencies are necessary in the team environments at this school. Each individual must participate for the team to complete the assignment.     Syer & Connolly (1996) describes a “team system” as a group of people who constitute a system of interrelated entities and whose members share a common goal. They argue that team members need to develop awareness of themselves and each other, and of their differences, through giving descriptive feedback.     A dominant style person is very guarded, direct and firm in their relationship with others; they are driven by productivity and to the bottom line. These individuals are willing to accept any challenge and dive headfirst into solving the problem. The dominant style member takes control while remaining decisive with their actions and decisions.     During the forming stage, the team showed hard work ethic. Rules were put into place that all members agreed to keep. The rules mainly consisted of communicating any issues, and have the assignment done to be put together two days before the due date. Assignments were done with ease. The quality of work was excellent, and finished on time. As assignments started to get harder the team moved into the storming stage. A higher expectation was given with the assignments, as the assignment began to be more demanding. The team members had to plan in order to be on the same page with the assignments. Each member had great enthusiasm and ideas of what would be a great plan for the assignments. While different ideas came, the group had to agree on one plan.     “Non verbal communication entails communicating by sending and receiving wordless messages. These messages usually reinforce verbal communication, can stand alone, and convey messages on its own” (Nayab, 2011). The reinforcement for non-verbal communication is obtained by body movements, hand gestures, facial expressions, tone of a voice and a touch. Amongst all of the reinforcement facial expressions is the most prevalent, since a smile or a frown can ultimately convey a message more than words can. A smile invites a person in, for example when you smile at someone that person feels at ease and wants to communicate more. On the other hand if the person is frowning this is a message to stay clear from that person, since it appears that something has made them mad. A firm handshake shows confidence and a neat appearance shows that the person respects themselves as well as others. A simple pleasant tone can express joy or pleasure, such as laughing at a joke or talking with a small child.
