Plato's Concept Of Freedom: Good Or Bad?
Freedom. Good or Bad? The idea of personal freedom and individuality is a concept that has been debated by philosophers throughout history. In 380 BC, Plato addresses his thoughts on freedom in society throughout The Republic. His main opinion is, too much freedom given to individuals will lead to an unjust society. This concept, through proven thoroughly, has some complications with adapting to todays society. Years later, Plato’s ideals are hard for today’s society to grasp. In an age of rapid change and constant growth, individuals feel entitled to freedom in society. Knowing Plato’s views and how our society works we are left with the question of whether or not his ideal society would transition well into our world. We must learn, from both today’s world and Plato, what the right amount of privilege the individual can have without it causing too much of a negative impact on society. I do not believe that we will ever have a clear, definite, answer of whether Plato’s concept on freedom would actually work within the society we have today. Nonetheless, we can take his values and try to adapt them to mold to our society’s ways. Freedom can go one of two ways, good or bad, and this all depends on how we use it within our world. The end goal of the Republic was to reach justice within civilizations and Plato did come up with a sensible plan. This plan may not work perfectly with each generation, but there in lies our jobs as individuals. We, as society’s both past and future, are responsible for figuring out justice within our cultures.
