These components typically include processor, which runs the program, in addition to the port for input and output connections. PLC union usually attached directly to the device or application being controlled. * An example of a commonly used type of union PLC Micrologix 1000, built by Allen Bradley. Micrologix 1000 includes onboard memory to store programs, 32 digital input and output ports, and a communications port used to program the unit. This preparation is typical of much union system.

Usually, as the basic module contains core functions such as the regulation of electric power, computer processors, and input connections. Additional modules, including analog to digital signal converter or additional output, can be added to this core unit as needed. This modular design allows the PLC to be modified and changed easily. * Allen Bradley Micrologix 1200 is an example of a commonly used type of modular PLC. This unit is able to handle between 23 and 40 inputs and outputs. The actual number of connections can be expanded simply by adding modules. This provides flexibility and is typical of many modular PLC.
