Pocket Ghetto Research Paper
A “pocket ghetto” is a small area of low-income housing with high minority group concentration that is isolated by physical barriers. The term began to be used by geographers as they studied postmodern cities. Michael Sorkin in his book, Variations on a Theme Park, described three dominating characteristics of the postmodern city: generic globalization, theme park commercialization, and an obsession with security. The third characteristic, an obsession with security, is the most important in terms of this research because the function of a pocket ghetto is to contain or ‘secure’ certain people within a certain area. Pocket ghettos form by either intentional construction or containment or by the negligent evolution of urban form. In cases like

Flemingdon Park is located in the North York region of Toronto. It is home to approximately 22,000 residents mainly from foreign places. This collective population accounts for approximately 0.8% of Toronto’s total population. This paper will thoroughly cover the diverse demographics of Toronto’s “Apartment City.” The conclusions will be drawn through strategically chosen features of the community’s demographics in relation to planning principles. Aspects that will be touched upon will include; age, gender, ethnicity/immigration and income in reference to dwelling types. By exploring such facets of the community, one will be able to depict the demographics of Flemingdon Park, thus the planning ideals as well. Furthermore, these numbers will then allow us to make a comparison between the City of Toronto as a whole and Flemingdon as a region. Careful analysis and interpretation of these sets of data will lead to a further understanding of Flemingdon and its social and developmental components. This information will give insight into the methodology and reasoning behind specific planning decisions. We will begin this study by examining the age groups within the neighbourhood, and then strategically progress and conclude with more specific findings with reference from Statistics Canada.…

In fact, gentrification has become a major challenge for poor people since specific residential sectors in Toronto have started being renovated through the introduction of private capital and middle-class residents (Zuberi, 1995). As King (2016) states, Trinity Bellwood, the area where FYFB is located, shows the first signs of gentrification as the house prices have increased and various new stores have occupied the streets despite the fact that low-income people still live in the area. In fact, our supervisor ensured that FYFB has started receiving more people as these changes affect the cost of services and lease in their neighbourhoods, limiting the amount of money for food supplies and other goods, such as clothing. Thus, I understood the difficulties of living in a global city, where new tendencies, development, and implement of new technologies have boosted the cost of live, causing that low-income people struggle to cover their expenses and search for help to cover their…

Gangs are coastally occurring in life they have no discrimination on race or gender causing any one to turn to the path of gang. Many gangs are usually created based on specific race making it easier for people to feel secure when it comes to join them. However as it is stated, “the 18th Street gang was the first Hispanic gang to break the racial membership barrier. Membership was originally open to Latinos. Although most members tend to be of Latino descent, membership has opened to other backgrounds, including Central American, African American, Middle Eastern, Asian, Caucasian, and Native American.” This causes the growth of the 18th street gang to grow and expand larger into the city of Los Angeles.…

“As historian Paul Kavieff explains: They were predatory group and they were known for their ruthlessness, I mean they shot everybody during these hijackings, even the guys that were simply driving the trucks. What that resulted in in was that if you were making a beer delivery and were robbed by the Purples, you fought to the death, because you knew that the Purples were going to haul you out of the truck and kill you anyways” (Whitting, 2013, Pg. 57). The Purple Gang was a ruthless Prohibition era gang that terrorized the people and rival gangs of Detroit with their horrific crimes and massacres.…

Should we give money to panhandlers? Well some people think so because they feel it is the right thing to do but on the opposite side of that coin some people feel that it is counterproductive to do that. Some businesses feel that panhandlers hurt their business by standing out front asking for money because they ask potential customers before they get to the door and if there offended by this they will not even bother going in to the business they were thinking about going in to before but on the opposing end depending on the business it could actually help them in the long run. Most people who give panhandlers money feel that they need that money because they feel the panhandlers are mentally, physically, or emotionally unable to work which some of…

This gentrification began with the onset of the redevelopment of the outlying areas surrounding its borders. Wall Street bankers, now finding themselves to be in a new class of wealthy, flocked to this exclusive area. Once again, Brooklyn Heights was more financially out of reach for lower income residents than ever before. For a family who once dreamed of living close to New York City and not out in the suburbs, Brooklyn Heights was no longer an option, even for many two income families. With the onslaught of the very wealthy and the accompanying increase in property values, local “mom and pop” stores which were mainstays for the locals over the course of many years were unable to afford their rent. Big businesses, such as The Gap, Barnes and Noble and CVS moved in to cater to the masses in the surrounding newly-developed neighborhoods now containing high-rise apartment buildings and scores of new residents. This type of gentrification seems to be contradictory to the desires of the class of people who inhabit the exclusive blocks of the historical district that one knows as Brooklyn Heights (Davidson, 2012).…

Throughout the course of time, the contraction of Levittown reshaped the land of suburbia. Before Levittown even existed, people have been appealed to the characters of living beyond the noise, pollution, overcrowding and disease of the city, while still close enough to enjoy the benefits of its industrial and cultural vitality. After World War II, suburbia conjures visions of traditional family life, idyllic domesticity and stability. In 1947, as more houses within this planned community of Levittown were built, the less room people had. Through various changes to the American’s ideal style house, Levittown changed the landscape of suburbia to occupy more people.…

What drives gentrification? (2014). This article is based on a speech at a recent ISO forum in Brooklyn, New York addressing the roots of gentrification and it responded on how residents of big cities everywhere face the effects of gentrification, as long-time residents are pushed out of neighborhoods due to rising rents and housing costs and other changes. The author provided an objective analysis from the perspective of the working class of New York and of all other cities undergoing gentrification by examining what appears to be two contradictory outcomes of gentrification: the "improvement" of a neighborhood on the one hand and the displacement of its long-time residents on the other. Flores also analyzed the misconception between geographers David Levy whose theory explains gentrification as flowing from the consumer preferences of a new, youthful, white-collar middle class that wishes to change from a suburban to an urban lifestyle and Late Neil Smith counterposes Levy 's theory with a class perspective by contrasting the owners of capital intent on gentrifying and developing a neighborhood having a lot more "consumer’s choice" about which neighborhoods they want to devour, and the kind of housing and other facilities they produce for the rest of us to…

Answer- Wittman refers to it as a ghetto out of self-protection. In history we see ghettos being formed by the Jews, Black people, and various immigrant groups because of their oppression and constant abuse by society. These ghettos served to protect oppressed groups as they were together and working together against a common oppressor. Wittman refers to it as a ghetto because it is exactly that: the gay “refugees of America” came to San Francisco for protection in numbers, thus creating a ghetto.…
