1. According to Wittman, what are the goals of the gay liberation movement? What do you think of these goals?
Answer- The goals of the gay liberation movement is to free themselves by coming out everywhere, initiate self defense and political activity, talk to other gay people and learn to understand, forgive, and accept, to “free the homosexual” in everyone, and to begin embracing being gay.
I think these goals are very ahead of their time but beautiful in their acceptance and love. It’s not very common that a group of oppressed individuals seek justice through love and acceptance first, rather than with violence. I think the goals are very admirable, and very brave for the time they were demanded. They also go deeper than just being about the Gay Rights movement, but also go into the Black Rights movement as well as the Women’s Liberation movement. As a bigger group comprised of several other oppressed groups, these goals are very reasonable.
2. Wittman refers to the gay neighborhood of San Francisco as a ghetto. Why? What is the difference between a ghetto and a “free territory”?
Answer- Wittman refers to it as a ghetto out of self-protection. In history we see ghettos being formed by the Jews, Black people, and various immigrant groups because of their oppression and constant abuse by society. These ghettos served to protect oppressed groups as they were together and working together against a common oppressor. Wittman refers to it as a ghetto because it is exactly that: the gay “refugees of America” came to San Francisco for protection in numbers, thus creating a ghetto.
The difference between a ghetto and a “free territory” is that a free territory is free, to put it simply. A free territory is not constantly harassed by the law or exploited by society. A ghetto is not a free territory because it is still controlled by the oppressors, it is still “theirs”. As Wittman
