Poem Analysis: I Hear America Singing
1 The poem I selected is called “I Hear America Singing” by Walt Whitman. The major theme I could find was how he could hear all the noises that go on around him in America and he compares the noises to singing. Some of the figurative language I saw was personification, metaphors, and repetition, which all help to show his meaning in this poem.The first figurative language I saw was personification. This was seen when he says that he couldhear America singing and how things belong to the day and others belong to the night. When hesaid that he could hear America singing he meant that the people doing their daily routines were singing while working and walking by. He also meant that people do things in the day such as go to work and go to the
park while during the night people would be with friends and family.The next thing I saw was metaphors. Like how the people working were singing in a choir. He means that when he hears them at the same time they sound like they belong together. This helped to make people view his perspective better.The final figurative language I saw was repetition. I saw a lot of this, like how he used the word the at the beginning of each new sentence or how he used or in the middle of a lot of his sentences. This helped the flow of his poem.All of this makes me think that what he meant was how when you listen and hear the environment around you makes you think that the country is singing to itself. All the figurative language helped us to understand what he meant like the personification.
