Poem Analysis Of Barbie Doll By Marge Piercy
Among all the poem that we were assigned, my personal favorite would be the “Barbie Doll” by Marge Piercy. The poem was written in 1969, but it is still the ugly truth of todays generation.The poem explains how the girls struggles with all the expectations from the society on what to do, how to look and even how to act. I believe that girls and even guys should be free to have their own life no matter how they look like. Moreover, the poem really engages me with its storyline, which most poem does not have. It has an exposition at the beginning, continued by a rising action, followed by a climax and lastly a really unexpected conclusion. Furthermore, I was attracted with the poems ending that puzzles me. At first, I thought the poem uses symbolism
to show that the girl undergoes a plastic surgery, making her beauty unnatural like a “Barbie Doll” and everyone was happy about it. After reading a few posts and answering the reading quiz, I never thought that Marge Piercy would literally mean it when she said to cut off her body parts that the people did not like to make her look beautiful but causes her death.
