Poem Reflection
Poems, they are interesting, attractive and most of the people enjoy them too. We had a poem contest in our school between grades. So, our contest between grades 8 went well and I had fun doing it. Something’s went well and something’s didn’t go that well, but overall it was a fun thing to do. I learned a lot of things by this poem competition. My role was to make posters. In the beginning I really liked my role because it was something I wanted to do and something that I was interesting in. I really liked my role also because I and the poster group all together were thinking as a group, people were sharing their ideas and we had really interesting conversations on what kind of posters should we make to make people vote for us, but suddenly everyone got separated and started to do what they thought was good without telling the group so, no one knew what the other person in their group was doing so that’s how I began to not like my role but it was still good. Something that I think didn’t go well was the posters because we made too much of mess. The people who were in the posters group didn’t do anything as a group they did whatever they wanted to, even if it was not so good. The big mistake about the posters was that the people who were putting the posters up, they didn’t do a well in their job because they putted the posters everywhere in the school for example: they putted the posters up on the class doors, lockers, washrooms, computer lab, and library and on all the walls. The classes didn’t like how we putted the posters on their class doors and lockers without their permission so, that was something we could’ve done better or even if the people wanted to put on the doors they could have asked them for their permission. The other thing about posters that I think didn’t went well was the way we made posters because we just wrote was that `` Vote for 8D`s poem`` to write that wasn’t a good choice because it didn’t attract people towards

A tattoo is like poetry, because there is always more to the story than what meets the eye! The sonnet “First Poem for You” by Kim Addonizio is a riveting piece of poetry that uses symbolization to help guide the readers to understand the emotions and feelings the woman has towards her partner. Visual and tactile imagery used within this poem helps readers interpret the meaning of the poem. The theme is longevity and the true meaning of a relationship. In Addonizio “First Poem for You,” Addonizio utilizes literary elements to develop the story and detail a fictional character that is in love with a man that has permanent tattoos. Upon analyzing the symbols, visual imagery and theme throughout this poem the readers will better comprehend the poem to its entirety; these elements symbolize permanence, which is the meaning of the entire poem.…

Take a minute to imagine “Men looking like they had been/attacked repeatedly by a succession /of wild animals,” “never/ ending blasted field of corpses,” and “throats half gone, /eyes bleeding, raw meat heaped/ in piles.” These are the vividly, grotesque images Edward Mayes describes to readers in his poem, “University of Iowa Hospital, 1976.” Before even reading the poem, the title gave me a preconceived idea of what the poem might be about. “University of Iowa Hospital, 1976” describes what an extreme version of what I expected the poem to be about. The images I described above are just some of the horrifying scenes described by Mayes. This poem spoke to me about the pain and suffering patients endure while staying in a hospital (whether it be a mental hospital or a medical hospital) and the horrific images the staff see daily. Mayes uses several types of imagery and literary tropes in his poem to give readers an intense visual sensation as they read his poem. The visuals Mayes placed in my own mind while I read this poem were intensely real and stuck with me long after I studied the poem.…

The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…

The writer, Phillis Wheatley, uses many descriptive details about the natural world in her poem. She compares the sun setting and the new evening with many rural details. For example, in line two, she says: "The pealing thunder shook the heav'nly plain;" She is referring to the empty plains of a rural area. I also wondered how the poem would sound if she chose to praise the evening using details of an urban setting.…

One time I took a leadership role that was the most relevant to me was when I was the leader in my robotics team in high school. I needed to take the role because everyone else seemed lost and I was the only one with previous robotics experience so I told everyone if they mid if I become the group leader and no one minded. One thing I learned about myself by being the leader is I am very good at giving people specific jobs and keeping everyone on task without them getting distracted. Another thing I learned about myself is i am a strict yet fun leader because I know when its time to stop playing around and get to…

The first thing one can notice in Sylvia Plath’s poem “Mirror” (rpt. In Thomas R. Arp and Greg Johnson, Perrine’s Literature: Structure, Sound, and Sense, 9th ed. [Boston: Wadsworth, 2006] 680) is that the speaker in the poem is the mirror and the woman in the poem is Sylvia Plath. As you read through the poem, the lake is relevant because of the famous mythological story of narcissus. He was extremely beautiful and one day while drinking from a lake he saw his reflection. He looked at it for so long and so close that he fell in the river and died. This shows the consequences of vanity. Sylvia Plath uses this metaphor to show that the little girl that used to look in that mirror has now drowned and an old woman rises towards her "like a terrible fish". This shows her dislike for herself. Sylvia Plath has been looking in this mirror every day for a long period of time, and she sees that she is getting older and she despises it. We get a sense of a time period because it says "over and over" and "day after day". Sylvia Plath had severe depression and she had very little compassion for herself. This poem shows how she is scared of the truth the mirror is showing her and how she tries to go to other things to feel young again.…

“Slaveship,” by Lucille Clifton, is a free verse poem from the perspective of slaves that the white men capture and trade in the slave trade, forcing them to travel on the Middle Passage. Ironically, the ships bear the names of religious symbols and figures such as Jesus, Angel of God, and Grace of God (lines 14-15) even though the act of slavery is one of the most sinful systems in the eyes of these slaves and in the eyes of all decent human beings.…

At the beginning of the book, I found the book extremely hard to read. The language Rilke was speaking in was different and hard to understand. Some points I got but some I didn’t and it became very wishy washy. I found myself having to read the same poem over and over until I got a clue of what he was talking about and what his purpose of the letters were. Then he said something that really made me think and look inside of myself and come to my senses. He told the poet to quit looking outside of himself and to stop asking for approval and for acceptance of his art form and to not be afraid to make mistakes. He told him to simply look inside of himself and ask himself if writing is really what he wants to do. To find in himself the command to write and to find that impulse in his heart that commands him to write and to find within himself the need to write as much as he needs oxygen to live. This really hit me because ever since I was a little five year boy, I realized I wanted to be a performer and I have never wanted to do anything else to this day. I have this need to do my art form, I sing when I talk, I dance when I walk, It’s in my blood. And that is when I really connected with the book and really understood what his purpose was to write to this young poet.…
