Words have much meaning, people have known this for generations. Throughout those generations people have found many different ways of getting these words with meaning spread out. The two ways of giving people this information will be discussed throughout this essay to show the differences and similarities between a song and a poem. The reason to compare the two are to see how the message is delivered to the audience and what the message is in the song and poem.
The song that will be used is “Bleeding Out” by Imagine dragons. The meaning of the song is about giving all you have to protect someone. The proof of what the song
’s meaning is when the lyrics (“Bleeding out for you, for you”) first come into the song. Which presents
the risk that the person would take for another that they care for.
The poem that will be compared and contrasted from the song is “Mercy” by Tyehimba Jess. The meaning of the poem is talking about the little things of war and what happens to someone state of mind. The poem “Mercy” had mentioned many horrific events like(lines 13-14 “ It has a hand of many lost hands/a palm of missing fingers”). This poem talks about the little thing of how war is and what it does like(lines 1-2 “the war speaks at night/with it’s lips of shredded children”)
What makes the song and poem similar is sacrifice. The song talks about risking everything for someone, while the poem is what someone has to do in war. Which war means sacrifice. It may sound like a little comparison, but it really isn't. The reason that it has to deal with sacrifice is what makes the song and the poem different. The sacrifice in both the song and poem is what brings them together. In conclusion “Bleeding Out” and “Mercy” both have similarities and differences.
