The story is mostly built up in a dialogue between the two main characters of the story, an old man and a young gentleman. The young gentleman tries to buy a love poison for his girlfriend, who he is afraid to lose. The old man, tell the young man the side effects and the magical things the love poison can do. Not caring about the bad things that can happen with him giving the love poison to his girlfriend, he takes off with the love poison hoping to make his girlfriend be with him forever. Collier underscore’s how dangerous the cynicism of an old man and the desire of a young man can lead to the need for an ideal of love that permits interchange, individuality, and understanding. This sort of love, because it excludes everything else in life, suffocates rather than pleases.…
For centuries, stories have been told amongst people all around the world. As time went on, people have searched for ways to help better memorize these stories. Stories were often written down by those who could write, which at the time was a small percent of people in the world. For those that couldn't write, they had no choice but to pass stories on verbally. These people soon realized that over time, stories are not always told properly, or are purposely changed. Stories told by song are not only kept the same, but they are also easier to remember. For example, during slavery, slaves depended on songs to lead them to freedom. One song was "Follow the Drinkin' Gourd." This song gave specific instructions on how to follow the stars, evade…

The inclusion of “This is my letter to the world” emphasizes the growth of the speaker. During the Price’s stay in Kilanga, the family witnessed hundreds of deaths. These were tragic occurrences in their eyes but to the natives, they were simply nature’s message. At the beginning of the novel Adah would have received the world’s writings with a wide-open mailbox. Being a character with a persecution complex and a slight case of self-pity, she would have welcomed death as a sweet escape to the mistreated life she had been placed in. Therefore, when the world so kindly delivered its message of death to those around her, Adah looked on with envy. Why was the world not writing to her? As the novel progresses, however, her outlook is transformed.…
The wounded heart now enormous tune of sorrow, Skunk breath a force to linger tomorrow. Saint unreal a body-less per poster, Bound by force that will never divide as greater. Benevolent a flaunt of no remorse, Unmistakable tone unruly of course. Patch up the hole in your britches; water new soil, Be thankful thieves ravishes in turmoil.…
The main theme of Snowbound is that no-matter what happens, family will be there to help and comfort. This theme is demonstrated widely throughout the poem and even more so in the last stanza of this excerpt. Another, less prominent, theme of Snowbound is the meaning and involvement of God in the lives of people.…
We come to life changing trials in our life, some may be a path that we are glad we did while others wished that we can go back and choose the other because of a negative result. In the poem written by Robert Frost “The Road Not Taken”, shows us that making a decision is not always easy. In the…

This morning we went outside with the teachers and the children into the small playground. R wanted a cooking tool to knock these new homemade instruments, but he can’t (could not) find one. So (Therefore) when R asked me to help him to find a cooking tool, I told (asked) him “Can you wait for you turn as your friend M had first” I asked him that could he wait for the next turn because his friend M had it first, and he said “yes” (answered yes). After a short time wait, he found one cooking tool on the sandpit. Then, R played these instruments looks like a musician, and then, I asked R “shall we sing your favorite song together?” and he replied “yes, old Macdonald had a farm.” After singing song, child R glanced over his shoulder to knock the second pan and he listened what the sound of the pan makes. After a short time of period, he changed to use another hand to knock the second cooking pot again with highly concentration listened what the sound of pot makes. He showed a big smile face to me and carried on knocking the third cooking pot. When he knocked the third cooking tools, and he found that the sound was different from others, so he listened carefully.…
The poem that I reviewed this week is called, “The Death Spread” by Tyler Brewington and I found it on versedaily.org on 5/09/16. In summary, this poem is about death and the uncomfortable yet beautiful images it can invoke.…
With all of the violence in the past, and now the most recent shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, society is more scared than ever. Dylann Roof, proven to be a white supremacist, walked into a church in Charleston, South Carolina and killed innocent people. This incident hit home for so many Americans because not only did the innocent people die, but it was in one of the safest places imaginable, a church (Tauber, Michelle). Many believe that weapons are to blame for this, and others believe that racism is the main focal point. This is not the first of violent crimes in a local church. A poem was written by Dudley Randall about a true story that happened in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. A group of white supremacists bombed a church that belonged to Martin Luther King Jr. What they did not know was that there were four little girls playing in there at the time. The church should be a safe, quiet place one can pray to God, but these incidents indicate that violence is creeping into the most innocent of…
In the poem Herrera, gives voice to feelings to those who have “iffy” immigration status and work in the United States. This poem mainly talks about immigration, which is a very controversial topic in the United States right now. Around the beginning of the poem the poet states that “husband, with the son, the wife, & the daughter.” He is trying to say that families are split in a gender specific way and in terms of immigration, legal or illegal. This is closely related to The House on Mango Street in a way that a person, no matter of gender is looking out of the window just as the main character from the book was doing.…
The poem is about a man who has killed his wife because she was having an affair. It is quite a serious poem, particularly in the first two stanzas. This is directly compromised with the amount of slang used in the poem, such as, “Banged Up” and “I slogged my guts out”. This makes the impression that the he has become mentally unbalanced by the murder of his wife.…
In the novel, Marquez has used his language skills to paint love as not always being a good thing. An example of this use can be found on the very first page, when Dr. Urbino compares the scent of cyanide to the fate of requited love. Now for some this may not mean anything, but later on the author writes that Doctor Urbino’s friend Jeremiah de Saint-Amour, who has died due to self-inflicted cyanide poisoning. Marquez is describing how love can be a poison and of how deadly it is. Something that’s even more interesting about cyanide poisoning is the symptoms that accompany it: weakness, giddiness, headaches, vertigo, and confusion just to name a few. Some of these could be related to love and its aftereffects. Everyone reacts to a breakup differently, whether it be physically or emotionally. Now back to the sentence itself; since poisoning eventually leads to death the author is trying to tell us that unrequited love almost always…
When life brings hostility to the writer, people grow bereaved of his true manners and the air proves unfit to breathe; this friend recalls his killers. Hence, their slithering hands defame this man who presented them with verses which interspersed their natal road.…
