In world war two, the Soviets lost more than 27,000,000 people and they wanted to protect Russia. The Soviets wanted to spread communism and the U.S wanted to keep communism contained. The Policy of Containment was a policy to stop the spread of communism. Why was the Policy of Containment needed? The Policy of Containment was needed for the U.S because of the Korean War, the Berlin Blockade, and the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Policy of containment was needed for the Korean War because North Korea, which are communists, wanted to take over South Korea. In Document C, it states that America wanted to help South Korea so that communism couldn’t spread to South Korea which was democratic. In Document C it also says that China which are communists
entered the war with North Korea and that made the United Nations and the United States go back into South Korea, with the war going on for a few years, finally ending in 1953. After the war, the borders were close to the original ones. The Policy of Containment was needed for the Korean War because it helped stop communism from spreading into South Korea. The Policy of Containment was needed for the Berlin Blockade because the Soviet Union blockaded any shipments coming into West Berlin (Document B). They did this because they wanted them to give up and become communists. This wasn't a good thing because America wanted communism to not be spread. America and the allies supported West Berlin by dropping supplies in for them, and then Stalin eventually removed the blockade (Document B).The Policy of Containment was necessary for this because it stopped the spread of communism to West Berlin. The Policy of Containment was needed for the Cuban Missile Crisis because Cuba became communist. This was a problem because the Soviets started shipping troops, missiles, and nuclear warheads to Cuba which is close to America (Document D). America then puts a quarantine against ships carrying offensive weapons into Cuba and the Soviets agree to remove their missiles (Document D). The policy was needed for this so that Cuba, which was communist, wouldn't be able to spread their communism with the Soviets help. In conclusion, the Policy of Containment was needed in the U.S because of the Korean War, Berlin Blockade, and Cuban Missile Crisis. The Policy of Containment made it possible for the Soviets to not take over Europe. It also kept communism contained so that it wouldn't spread.
