Political Environment Case Study This case study provides some good examples of how politics can affect improvement in areas that are much needed within society in general, but especially regarding the area of criminal justice. This is a very likely situation that could happen and shows some of the problems that are involved that slows down the process of improvement. I believe in this particular case study there are extra factors involved such as the governor being a retired football player. This has given him the reputation that he needs but it does not give him insight or experience with the problems regarding the criminal justice field. However, I would not be interested in negotiating. If my programs and new policies are showing improvement and success I would not be willing to compromise these things for the sake of an ex-pro football player’s reputation. I feel that is the position the governor is coming from. My position is that I am improving the corrections system, improving individual’s lives, providing them with trades and skills that they can use when they are released, and giving them the tools to succeed in the real world without having the need to reoffend and end back up in the prison system for society to pay for. In a situation like this, I would defend my policies and the success of them until I was ousted from my position. If society and the correctional system felt that I had done such a good job with making these necessary changes, I don’t feel that I would be able to be fired from my position without much debate and …show more content…
In a situation like this, there would be many supporters throughout society, the criminal justice system, the corrections facilities which I am in charge of, the inmates themselves, the inmate’s families, etc. There would be too much support I could find to stand behind me before I would have to give in and do something completely against my morals and work ethic.     I would respond to the governor’s request to dismantle the programs in a professional manner by sending him a list of the pros and cons of how the programs are working.     In California we have the issue of having rules and laws that punish first time offenders and even some low level offenses punishable by jail time. Now you can blame it on the economy but people are getting more desperate and committing more crimes than before and getting thrown into our penal system. Governor Jerry Brown of California did a good job coming into office and creating rules and policies that punished the criminals and at first we thought it was a good idea to punish criminals hard and try to make them realize that crime doesn’t pay and give them harsh punishments, but in retrospect this plan backfired because now we are overcrowded at every state prison to the point where we even ship inmates out of state to other facilities. This overcrowding affects health of guards and inmates seeing that they are so close together for many hours out the day.
