The battle of Fort Sumpter was important because it motivated the North to gather an army and begin fighting. It was a big mistake of the South not to allow the Union to bring supplies to the fort. Another important conflict was the ship Alabama, made for the Confederacy by Britain. Then Britain bought two battle ships that the South was building, to avoid starting a war with the North and having them invade Canada. The battle of Bull run is important because it led to the South being overconfident in their victory. The Seven Days Battle was significant because it demonstrated to the North and President Lincoln that total war against the South was necessary.…
Black people could not vote, nor own land. They cropped ears and left scars if you thought about escaping. Slavery was happening at this time, so African Americans were property and didn’t have a say so. After the texas revolution most texans would run away to mexico. Slaves later became free June 19, 1865 which led to the thirteenth amendment; that abolished slavery. Discrimination started at the end of the reconstruction era; white southerners was angry. Lynching also started after the reconstruction era. Residential segregation did not exist in 1870. The buffalo soldiers were the first blacks in the US army. For black votes they would supply things like better schools and street paving. The fourteenth amendment protected equal civil rights for black people. Later on African Americans could participate in politics but only a few participated. Later the Voting Rights Act showed minority voters couldn’t be forced. Between 1970 and 1995 became less discrimination and more job training…
Through the years of American history there’s been many different amendments past through the government that have given, taken, or altered the rights of all citations. While during the era of reconstruction was happening, there was 3 important amendments passed through congress theses being the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments. The 14th amendment had 5 sections within the article covering many different parts of rights of congressmen, state repetions, and people within them. Eric Foner who write the book A short history of reconstruction talks about the undergoing power this amendment had to switch power and majority in the house of legislative branch of government. There was the thought that black suffrage was not avoidable and nothing was…
• 15th amendment was a final guarantee of blacks right to vote (it also forced some northern states to allow African Americans the right to vote).…
Where originally the goal was to reform the United States of America and answer the question of slavery in the states (popular sovereignty or not), was changed to the abolitions of slavery and appeasing and angry south. According to the Republican Party Platform of 1864, the addition of the 14th and 15th amendments granted the right of suffrage and citizenship demanded by the convention of coloreds only further aggravated the war torn south (Doc H). As a result the government was forced to focus the majority of Johnson’s presidency on the reconstruction on the US. Blacks were supporters of the reconstruction, as shown by their extremely instrumental involvement in the constitutional conventions (Doc J). Blacks were able to gain full citizenship and suffrage, feats that would have been otherwise impossible if they had not affected the course of the civil war in t hey way that they…
The 15th amendment granted all MEN the right to vote regardless of race, color, or previous account of servitude. Yes that’s great and all but woman still didn’t have this right but that’s coming later. After ratification of the trio amendments, former slaves were now allowed to seek work outside of their masters’ bidding.…
After the Civil War, Confederate soldiers were allowed to hold office. This allowed Southerners to pass laws that helped end Reconstruction. During Reconstruction African Americans started to have rights that whites had, like voting rights. After Confederate soldiers began to hold office, they immediately created laws against blacks such as Jim Crow laws and Black Codes. Both of these were similar in that they restricted blacks from doing common things like voting and having jobs.…
Though they were still enslaved in a way, African Americans felt like they should be allowed to “have a voice within the government” Northern states fought so that African Americans could have equal rights within the government. This lead to the 15th amendment which allowed African American men to vote. The Civil War has shaped America into what it is today. Although the Civil War ended decades ago, it still restricts African Americans today in numerous ways.…
During a period of Reconstruction, there were two exceptionally significant implications to the U.S. Constitution: the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments. The Fourteenth Amendment, ratified in July of 1868, consisted of five sections, which ultimately stated that ALL “persons born or naturalized in the U.S., and subject to jurisdiction thereof are citizens”. Additionally, it reduced state representation in Congress proportionally for any state disfranchising male citizens, denied former Confederates the right to hold office, and lastly repudiated (meaning disclaimed/disowned) Confederate debt. Moving right along, the Fifteenth Amendment, ratified in March of 1870 and consisting of only two sections, guaranteed the right of suffrage to ALL…
The Reconstruction period (1865-1877) was the era of rebuilding, the south, after the Civil War. In the South reconstruction meant rebuilding the economy, establishing new state and local governments and establishing a new social structure between whites and blacks. Abolishing slavery, what should be demanded of the Southern states, restoring political rights to the South, and what should be the responsibility of the newly freed slaves were the concerns doing the Reconstruction period. They also wanted to know how the economy should be rebuilt based on free labor. Reconstruction addressed how the eleven seceding states would regain self-government and be reseated in Congress. The laws and constitutional amendments that laid the foundation for…
A major change that occurred during the Reconstruction is that instead of the South being devoted to agriculture to and politics, the South was wide awake to business. Another change is that African Americans were allowed to vote. Also, it helped African Americans establish schools. Although the Reconstruction allowed African Americans to vote, the K.K.K. threatened them to prevent the blacks from voting.…
White people who lived in the South had to swear in order to vote so basically the white people got their right to vote kind of taken away. The Fourteenth Amendment granted full citizenship to all individuals that was born in the United States. Some African Americans in the US was born in the US they soon became full citizen. Another right that was given was that African Americans were allowed to go to school and learn how to read and…
Reconstruction could not have succeeded without the aid of the freedmen, who contributed greatly to the adding of the Constitution that totally changed the society during the late 1800s. Many African Americans united themselves together after freedom was given to them due to the Emancipation Proclamation. Feeling eager to gain more equalities, they gathered together and petitioned to the federal government for the “right to vote and, on occasion, to organize their own ‘freedom ballots.’” For many freedmen, equality and liberty is not achieved until they also enjoy the right to have ownership over land and property. As a response to the desperate desire of the freedmen, the federal government passed the Thirteenth Amendment that guaranteed every…
The 15th amendment stated than any male citizen, regardless of color, or past servitude, could vote, and that the states could not deny them this. Having the right to vote was a huge victory for Blacks. White Americans, especially those in politics, could no longer ignore them, since their vote could decide who became Governor, Senator or even President. This gave Black people a lot of power bot socially, and politically. The fact that people who were once enslaved could vote, also helped developed an argument for women to gain suffrage, which occurred 50 years later. The 15th amendment was a major step toward equality, and was a huge win for the United States, even if people during the 1870’s could not see that at the…
The choices of President Lincoln and Johnson shaped most of the era. The radicals strongly supported having rights for African Americans. The Reconstruction Era transformed the nation both positively and negatively. Since most of Johnson’s plan for reconstruction was unfavored, the radicals fought back by passing the Fourteenth Amendment amongst many other things. After Johnson was impeached, the Republicans nominated Grant for President. The Republican based Congress passed the Fifteenth Amendment which declared the right to vote “shall not be denied… on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” The radicals plan for Reconstruction had a positive impact during the era. It transformed the Southern politics dramatically by letting African Americans join the political process. To conclude, this was how the Reconstruction Era shaped the…
