had no idea that triangles were so unique in comparison to other polygons. Consequently, triangles are the building block for all shapes.
The measurement video opened my eyes to a few new concepts. First, I have a new outlook on measurement. The video shared that measurement is simply how things relate to each other in our world. However, I’ve never really viewed measurement in this manner. I’ve always thought about the size or capacity of objects. Henceforth, the overall subject of the video was volume. The video shared that we live in a 3-D world where volume is extremely important. It’s also important that we know which formulas to use when we are calculating the volume of various items. Although this video was very informative, most of the content was not new to me. My unit on volume entails the exact same activity that was used in the video.
After viewing both the polygon and the volume videos, it’s clear that I could implement some of the methods into my own classroom. As I mentioned earlier in this post, polygons are a huge unit of study for fifth graders. However, unlike the video clip, we don’t dig deep enough into the concepts. I feel that was just skim the top of the surface. I would like to dig deeper. I really like the visuals that the teacher used, as well as all the hands-on-activities with the length manipulatives tool. I feel that this instruction would benefit my fifth graders better.
