ABSTRACT
In all aerobic organisms, production of free radical is balanced by antioxidant defense system. Antioxidants are very important in terms of preventing oxidative stress that may lead to several degenerative diseases. Studies have been done on the sky fruit leaves, bark and seeds and they were reported to have many medicinal value. The aim of this study is to evaluate the antioxidant properties of sky fruit kernel and sky fruit seed coat. The seeds of the sky fruit were peeled and separated into seed coat and kernel. The samples were extracted using soxhlet method with 70% ethanol. Total antioxidants activities of phenolic and flavonoid content have been determined using Folin-Ciocalteau reagent and aluminium chloride colorimetric assay, respectively. Then the extracts were evaluated for their antioxidants activities by using DPPH free radical scavenging assay. From the results obtained, sky fruit kernel showed higher phenolic content (17.44 g GAE/100g dry extract) and flavonoid content (189.43 g QE/100g dry extract) than sky fruit seed coat (2.70 g GAE/100g dry extract and 37.43 g QE/100g dry extract, respectively). Both samples showed antioxidant activity with EC50 value of the kernel extract was lower (0.12 mg/mL) and thus stronger DPPH scavenger than the seed coat (1.50 mg/mL). Based on this study, it can be concluded that sky fruit kernel has been shown to possess higher antioxidant activity and higher polyphenols content than the seed coat part of the sky fruit.
