First of all, a multinational company is an enterprise operating in several countries but managed from one country. Generally, any company or group that derives a quarter of its revenue from operations outside of its home country is considered as a multinational corporation. For this essay I have chosen to discuss about the multinational company: Carrefour. Carrefour is a French multinational company which works in the sector of retailing and which was created in 1959. Its headquarter is situated in Boulogne Billancourt, France. Indeed, Carrefour it’s one of the biggest hypermarket chains of the world competing with Wal-Mart, Tesco and Costco. Additionally, it’s qualified as a multinational company because it’s operating across the World, more precisely in Europe, Asia and South America.
Firstly, in order to extend the influence of Carrefour across the world, this company buys others little enterprises or enterprises with difficulties in foreign countries. For instance, Carrefour bought in 2007, the hard discount company called Tengelmann which became the first distributor in Spain recently.
Afterwards, Carrefour opened its first hypermarket store outside of France, in Belgium, in 1969. The creation of hypermarket concept, in 1960, attracted a lot of people because now, they can do their shopping also but under the same roof. Additionally, the second concept of Carrefour is the hard-discount. Indeed, they try to attract consumers with low prices. The company has created its proper brand affirming that the products are cheaper but with good quality. That’ why, since 2012, the slogan of Carrefour is “Low in price... but high in trust.” Moreover, other strategy of this company in foreign countries is to develop hypermarket but with local adaptability.
