INTRODUCTION
Petoskey Power Equipment Service (Petoskey Power) is owned and operated by Harry Oldham in the North West section of New Bedford, Massachusetts. It is a one-man operation where Harry performs all aspects and functions of the business. His primary job function is to repair power tools of all types and sizes; from the most basic to the most advanced. At any time he may be working on 20 or 30 tools ranging from a simple drill that any person might have in his tool shed, to a highly intricate repair of a generator or an engine, and anything in between.
Harry hails from Petoskey, Michigan, which is the namesake for his business. After retiring from a career in the navy, Harry worked a number of jobs in construction and industrial fields. Approximately 35 years ago he began working on power tools and has done so since, both self-employed and as an employee. He has been operating Petoskey Power in a workshop located in the rear section of Metro Industrial & Marine Supply since 2005.
The mission statement Harry uses for his business is “there is always someone quicker and cheaper. I’ve been in business repairing power equipment for 35 plus years. Most of my competition is in the past. I have lasted this long!” Harry has numerous company policies. First of all, he only sells Honda parts and nothing else. Secondly, he has a sign that states, “There are no how-to classes to anyone,” meaning that he will not teach customers how to perform the repairs themselves. Also, he lets his customers know that “when they need the tool, it is not an option!” He states that the customers will receive the tool when it is their turn and he makes no exceptions.
PROBLEMS The proprietor of Petoskey Power Tools is encountering a myriad of problems including shortsighted managerial decisions, which
