In the Outsiders, by S.E Hinton, Ponyboy shows that he doesn’t want his hair cut. He says that “It was my pride” and shows clear dislike to the idea of cutting his hair. The reason he is like that is that greasers are known for their hair, and it makes them feel like they belong. Ponyboy’s is very special to him and says that it makes him look “tuff.” When his hair is cut and bleached, he looks in the mirror and sees what he looks like. Ponyboy continues to say that he looks “like a blasted pansy.” Greasers are known for their hair and if they lose that, they don’t feel like they fit in or belong. Ponyboy describes his new look as “being in a Halloween costume we can’t get out of.” It goes to show that even a haircut can change somebody’s appearance…

    Subliminal Passages

Two ways the author tells us about the main character are through direct information and subliminal hints. What I mean by that is that the author tells us direct information about the character (example: “Bobita has green hair”, meaning Bobita’s hair is green). The author can also write a line that is subliminal, and causes us to infer and understand said line (example: “Bobita spilled milk, and cried as usual”, meaning Bobita has a tendency to get emotional even if it is not necessary. An example of direct information from the story is “I have light brown, almost-red hair…” An example of a subliminal hint is “I was wishing I looked like Paul Newman...” This phrase tells us, that like most people, Ponyboy has some insecurities.…

The characters are all described by their actions, and the only one who we know for certain a bit about what he looks like is John, one of the wardens. She called him “a yard of pump water”, but that’s all we get. We can guess a bit though. Deadly Dudley for example, it says that he’s really slow, so we can assume he’s not in a very good shape, and possibly fat too.…
