Position on Nuclear Energy
Nuclear Energy, Issues and Solutions

With the creation of Nuclear weapons, potentially the worst thing that has happened to humanity in it's history, came something with a lot of potential to do good. Nuclear energy is both very clean and very efficient. However there have been many tragic accidents regarding Nuclear energy. Chernobyl is the most notable disaster, currently however we are in the middle of a potential disaster unfolding at Japan's Fukushima Nuclear Facility. Nuclear Energy is relatively safe and incredibly efficient and clean, however when tragedy strikes, it strikes hard.

Pripyat, the city most affected by the Chernobyl disaster, will potentially never be inhabited by humans again. That said there have only been 3 major accidents in the cumulative 14,500 years of nuclear reactor service in 33 countries. With nuclear power generating over 12.4% of the worlds energy I believe nuclear power can be safely and successfully implemented. First, older reactors need to be inspected and need to meet stringent modern requirements. Those that do not meet the requirements need to be decommissioned and replaced with more modern, safer reactors. Once this happens the dark past of nuclear energy will be behind humanity and only the incredibly bright future will be ahead.

Nuclear power's future is too bright to give up on it. Fusion Reactors are a possibility in the near future and will result in far safer reactors with virtually no chance of a meltdown, also day to day operations don't require the transportation of radioactive materials. There is also no long lasting radioactive waste. In President Obama's presentation of the 2014 budget Nuclear research was cut by 14.7%. I believe this is a big mistake. The less money that Nuclear research receives the longer we are stuck with unsafe reactors and nuclear waste plaguing generations to come.

The goals of nuclear energy need to be a complete transition to fusion power within the next 100 years. This would completely solve the worlds energy concerns for millions of years to come. This can be achieved by bring the brightest minds together to accelerate the process of creating a functioning fusion reactor. More money needs to be put towards fusion research in order to achieve this. However the investment is worth it as it results in safe, clean energy production for many many years to come.

Many people around the world ask themselves what are the disadvantages of adopting an alternative solution to solve the consumption of global nuclear energy? Based on what we have experienced through events with major disasters and the aftermath of many casualties, it has summed up to result in having failures outgrowing expectations. Therefore, global nuclear power usage is to be opposed due to the fact that it comes with high financial costs, nuclear waste management complications, and the fact that thousands in populations are mass numbers of casualties.…

Over centuries humans have always continued to try and find new ways of converting one form of energy into one which humans can manipulate for their own use. One of the most recent forms of converting energy, which is gaining in popularity is nuclear energy. With 14 percent of the world using it today it is a viable alternative to burning fossil fuels. To give you a basic idea on how the process of converting energy works according to the Canadian Nuclear Association is as basic as, “splitting the uranium atom to generate the heat that is used to produce steam for the production of electricity”(www.cna.ca). However things do not always run so smoothly, and the leakage of the nuclear material could have devastating consequences to both the land and its inhabitants. One of the bigger well know events of this nature, came from the power plant Chernobyl. To put simply it is a plant that exploded releasing nuclear waste into the atmosphere. Although this is detrimental to the environment the significance behind this event is because of this accident, we have now learned from our mistakes and are taking more precautions so that history is not repeated. I will prove that history will not be repeated through some background knowledge of the plant, what happened during the meltdown and how it effected the land and inhabitants, and finally what insight we have gained from this event and its significance to history.…

Nuclear power’s bad reputation has come about due to the accident at nuclear plants such as Chernobyl in Ukraine, Fukushima in Japan and Three Mile Island in the USA. Chernobyl was one of the only ones out of three that has been classified as a “major accident” by The International Atomic Energy Agency; the other was the accident at Fukushima. The reason the Chernobyl accident was considered a “major accident”, was due to the emergency shutdown failing, with a full melt down being achieved. This area is not able to be populated ever again due to the extreme…

    2. In “Small Recactors Make a Bid to Revive Nuclear Power”, the Obama Administration and the Energy Department are working on making America the leader in advanced nuclear technology and manufacturing (Biello 2012). They are considering switching the large reactors, which are currently the predominant technology, to small reactors, which will save money. These reactors would contain enough power to power more than 200,000 U.S. homes for a year (Biello 2012). This strategy will cause less nuclear waste and will increase safety issues as well. In another article, “Time to revive, not kill, the nuclear age”, it is stated that a world without nuclear power would be less secure. Neither fossil fuels nor renewable resources will be able to replace the 14 percent of global electricity generated by nuclear reactors (Financial Times 2011). This article sides with MacFarlane by saying the Chernobyl accident was bad, but since then things…

Nuclear power uses unstable elements like uranium. Uranium is constantly going through a process called nuclear decay, which means the atom is splitting apart over a period of time, measured in half-lives. This is why it is the element of choice for nuclear power plants. Uranium is special because it can go through what is called induced fission. Induced fission is when a free neutron is fired at an atom (like uranium). The atom will absorb the neutron, and immediately becomes unstable and splits apart. When the uranium atom splits, it will split into two separate atoms and expels two or three neutrons depending on how the atom splits. A single uranium atom, when going through induced fission, will release about 200 MeV (million electron volts). The atoms contained in one pound of uranium release as much energy as burning 1,000,000 gallons of gas. There are pros and cons of nuclear power, but is nuclear energy worth the risks?…

    Nuclear Power Plants

The question of whether the U.S. should have nuclear power plants is very controversial. There are two sides that one can take; however, both sides have their own share of problems. If you chose to not have nuclear plants, then eventually all natural resources will run out. The oil supply will run out relatively soon, and all other sources will run out too. The natural resources that we have now are still harmful to the earth however. The gas which we use for our cars pollutes the air and considering the amount of cars the are driven each day, it is ripping apart the o-zone layer. However, if the U.S. does decide to use nuclear plants, then there is a great danger of toxic waste invading our rivers, and also the chance of a spill similar to Chernobyl. As we saw in the Chernobyl video, there is great danger when using nuclear energy. If this were to happen is the United States, the risk of mortality is much higher because the area's in which there would be a plant such as a big city are very densely populated. Because of these facts, I do not think that the U.S. should renew its efforts to develop more nuclear plants.…

Furthermore, nuclear power is too expensive. For instance “Many supporters and critics say nuclear power biggest impediment is economic.”(8,8) Even people who agree with nuclear power agree that the cost is too high the amount of workers and materials that will be needed and how long the process is too much money for the economy. Like this quote states “But in reality is wasting yet more time and money pursuing the nuclear nightmare would be, too expensive, too risky.…

Although nuclear energy can cause many problems such as nuclear accidents, it saves money, produces less pollution, and it can be made in any environment. The benefits of nuclear energy outweigh the risks. Without nuclear energy we would be relying on the weather for energy.…

Throughout the world, countries are leaning towards nuclear energy due to the amount of energy it can produce with very little resources. This topic is worth investigating since energy is basically a must, now in the 21st century. It is now considered an essential to have energy in our lives to maintain our standards of living. We have gone to many different sources of energy other than nuclear energy such as coal, solar, wind, oil and more, but many of those energy source have flaws too. Some sources of energy will reach the peak of their production due to resources and will eventually fall, others pollute the environment just like nuclear energy and some just don’t produce enough energy for us to fully rely on them. Many countries needed a new source of energy since…
