Eugenics is defined as the manipulating of reproductive processes to produce a specific outcome (Class discussion). There are type types of eugenics, negative and positive. With negative eugenics the technology is used to prevent a genetic flaw (Class discussion). An example of this would be altering a fetus’ gene to make sure the child does not have diabetes even though it runs in the family. Positive eugenics, on the other hand, would be using the technology to create a child that has specific treats or features desired by the parents (Class discussion). Another term for this would be a designer baby. There are many different ways to look at eugenics. In the end all of the questions that can be asked about eugenics and altering genes comes down to whether or not eugenics is ethical. If something is ethical then it is relating to moral principles of knowledge dealing a specific situation. Every situation is different when it comes to the medical field. There are no two patients that will be the same and this also goes for different situations regarding eugenics. There are some situations where eugenics should be used to improve the life of the child and there are some situations were the use of eugenics is uncalled for in children. Even the Roman Catholic Church believes that AIH is an expectable form of creating a child as long as it is not a substitute for the sexual intercourse (Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith 1989). The church only agrees with AIH and not AID. This is where my opinion differs from the church. As a practicing Lutheran there are aspects of the practices of the Roman Catholic Church that I disagree with. This is a perfect example; I would say that either type of artificial insemination is an expectable from of creating a child as long as all parties involved consent for the process to be done. Personally if I were to be artificially inseminated in order to create a child I would want the sperm used to be from my husband, but I believe that every women should have the right to have a baby even if she in not married. Artificial insemination is, in my opinion, a safer and smarter way to have a child then hooking up with a guy in order to get pregnant. There is less of a chance of getting an STD if artificial insemination is used and all artificial inseminations have to be approved by both the women who wants the child and the man whose sperm is bing
