A new baby, a new family member is usually a very exciting thing. Although many changing are taking place in mom and dad’s life, normally these are all good and positive things, and they are overjoyed with excitement. However, many mothers begin to experience scary negative feelings soon after the birth or their baby. This condition, if extreme, is called Postpartum Depression. Postpartum Depression is a terrible disorder because it can affect the mother’s health in a negative way, it can cause many problems for the new family, and worse yet put the new family member’s health and well-being at risk. It can cause the mother to experience panic attacks, which consist of paralyzing fear. This condition is called Postpartum Panic Disorder. It can cause Postpartum Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (PPOCD). This disorder may cause the mother to have unwanted thoughts, which can result in destructive behaviors. Or just compulsive behavior such as crying the newborn’s diaper over and over, even before the child even wets the diaper. Another disorder Postpartum Depression results in is Postpartum Post Traumatic Stress (PPPTSD). This condition arises from complications at birth. Where the mother and/or the child experienced complications from the birth process. This can leave the mother feeling powerless. It can even lead to the mother avoiding driving by the hospital where the child was born to avoid remembering the incident. And lastly, it can cause, Postpartum Psychosis (PPP), this is the most dangerous, but least common of all the disorders. This results the mother having delusions, a loss of touch with reality, and even may result in visual hallucinations. In severe cases it can cause the mother to harm herself or the newborn child, or both. This first thing is overcome, is admitting there is a problem in the first place. As the last thing most new mothers would to admit to, is that a problem exists. They would to live up to all the beautiful expectations they have been reading about since the beginning of their pregnancy. When things are not “perfect” or just as they are in all the books, this itself can lead to disappointment. Once a new mother admits there is a problem and seeks help, the decision of should she take medication, especially when best feeding presents itself. But fortunately many studies have shown that there are medications out there that do not affect the baby, through breastmilk. Zoloft being one of those medications that doctors has found that the levels in the breastmilk is so low, it cannot even be detected in laboratory blood
