Poverty, Inc. Film Discussion Points
The documentary film, Poverty Inc., provides an inside look at the aid provided to foreign counties and the adverse effects of aid programs within developing countries. The following are some opinions and questions I have after viewing the film.
• Foreign aid to Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) takes on many forms such as food, clothing and financial means. Not all aid is beneficial to a developing country.
• Some NGO’s are in the business of developing high paid positions for the executives of the NGO itself. These organizations are mismanaged and not providing the type of aid that would build a long term solution to the counties problems.

What are some examples of a better form of aid?
• How can a donor country help develop a sustainable future for citizens of third world countries that does not develop a culture of free food and supplies?
• What is the difference between emergency aid and the type of aid often provided by NGO’s?
Answers to follow up questions:
Some of the unintended consequences are free food results in the local farmer not having a market to sell his food in and therefore he stops farming and obtains free food himself. Another unintended consequence results in business owners and workers not having markets and people to buy their products when the same products and services are provided for free by the NGO’s.
Countries that want to help third world countries with aid should develop programs that help citizens of the third world build and develop industries, food sources, and educational/medical systems with the people and resources of the country and not rely upon foreign aid for these services and
