If the story was located any other place than Mount Baker it would take away from the main conflict of them not being able to get home Christmas Eve. Also, the setting taking place at Mount Baker shows the character’s love for skiing and the adventures side of the dad. In the middle of paragraph two it describes the setting as, “The snow whirled around us in bitter, blinding squalls, hissing like sand…” This suggests that it was starting to get miserable and scary to keep skiing because the weather was so harsh.
Furthermore, the father’s unpredictable and irresponsible actions in life is just like the unpredicted snow in the story causing major conflict.
