Power Of Habit Analysis
Habits are subconscious practices in which are brain creates to perform tasks in efficient ways, allowing us to go day to day without feeling repetitive. Charles Duhigg explains the theories behind habits in The Power of Habit and how we form them in order to save us from the trite tasks of everyday life. Due to constant methods of performing tasks or simple urges our brain connects the three factors Cue, Routine and Reward to create a single bond; moving what is normally inside the Prefrontal Cortex transferring it into the Basal Ganglia. The Basal Ganglia is responsible for the subconscious thoughts and actions performed in our daily lives, allowing the brain to focus on other tasks while still going through the automatic response. The clicking of the door opening for the rat relates to the moving into an enviorment in which I don’t need shoes, this is the cue that was created. The routine was me removing my shoes once I got into that environment similar to the way the rat was running the maze and looking for the cheese. And finally, the reward was the feeling of release from the confined environment as finding the cheese was for the rat. From what I learned through Duhigg’s explanations I need to address my habit loop by looking further into what drives me to take off my shoes and adjust what I do to accommodate a new habit through The Golden rule of habit change. I believe the reason I crave to take off my shoes is because I constantly have to wear shoes at school, work, normal outings and other activities requiring shoes. Because of this I think that the moment I get a chance to remove them I take it to relive some of the compression, and it doesn’t help that most of the shoes I wear do not support the arch one my foot causing some ache. How to change the craving is hard to do unless you fully understand the reasoning behind the craving, so in my case the reason is the confinement and the lack of

    In “The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business” by Charles Duhigg, he thoroughly explains to us how habits work. In Chapter 3 of “The Power of Habit” Duhigg first introduces us to “The Golden Rule”. The rule states that you cannot adopt new behaviors, but slowly change the routines of those behaviors. Belief can also play a huge part in changing these behaviors. Without belief, people will not have the motivation they need to be able to change the routine of their behaviors.
