In the novel, the book thief, by Markus Zusak illustrates the power of words which are used to create hatred among countries and individuals, and also has the ability to bring society close with love, and happiness. The power of words is use to establish that in relationship, often times words heal the heart, but can also destroy it.
Words have the ability to destroy the soul. As for Liesel, she learnt how to read and understand, and also did researches on the words which made her smart. She used the words on the mayor’s wife due to the pain she felt. The mayor’s wife fired Liesel’s mama which triggered Liesel to act like that in an angry way for example, “Liesel, however, did not buckle. She sprayed her words directly into the woman’s eyes…Liesel could see it on her face. Cuts had opened up and a series of wounds were rising to the surface of her skin. All from Liesel words” (Zusak 263). The words from Liesel made the mayor’s wife understand that she deserve to be happy, and not to grieve for her dead son. Secondly, words can affect people, and make them feel isolated for example, Nazi Germany called the Jews “filthy Jews” (209).
