The MSN practicum is an opportunity for you to make a direct impact as a nursing leader in your workplace or community by integrating your nursing skills and knowledge into a project to demonstrate what you have gained while working on your MSN. The practicum classes consist of NUR/590A (a 1 credit class) and NUR/590B (a 2 credit class). Between the two classes, you complete the practicum project with a minimum of 60 practicum hours under the guidance of a practicum mentor.
At the core of the University of Phoenix College of Health Sciences and Nursing’s philosophy is the concept of the Nurse Leader. Given this philosophy, you must have a practicum mentor with a minimum of a master’s degree specifically in nursing (MSN, MN, PhD or doctorate in nursing, etc.) to guide you throughout your practicum so that you have an experienced nursing leader sharing their own master’s-level nursing knowledge and skills with you.
In NUR/590A (3 weeks long), you will write a practicum learning agreement. This agreement will serve as the plan for what you will be doing to complete your practicum project and meet the 60 required practicum hours. The learning agreement outlines how you will accomplish the project’s goal and objectives and what you will turn in as evidence that you accomplished the project. You will also list your practicum mentor on the agreement. You begin the project only after you earn a passing grade in NUR/590A and your faculty member approves your learning agreement.
You will work on the practicum project and complete your minimum of 60 practicum hours between NUR/590A and NUR/590B (you may take other classes between NUR/590A and NUR/590B). You will keep track of your 60 practicum hours and reflect on your practicum experiences in a practicum journal. Once you have completed 30 practicum hours, you should send a midpoint review summary and your practicum journal to your NUR/590A faculty member. The faculty member will review
