They also eat injured and sick animals. When they are not scavenging for food that is already dead, they hunt smaller prey like possums, rabbits, and birds. In rare events, large Dingo groups have been known to attack a human, but Dingoes normally give humans their space.…

The Burmese python is a very intriguing reptile. These carnivores can grow up to 20 feet long and have a diet of mostly small mammals and birds. They have scales that make beautiful colors and patterns which is probably why they are common choices for pets. They do not have venom but do possess other means of hunting. The pythons have sharp, curved teeth which dig into the animal they are hunting. As the animal tries to escaping it is just digging itself deeper in to the python’s teeth. Once the prey is weak the snake strangles it to death and eats it whole. They use chemical receptors to sense heat for finding food. “The pythons are extraordinary breeders with voracious appetites to match (paragraph 4).”They come in many interesting colors and sizes.…

Study leader, Michael Dorcas said, “There certainly is a possibility that pythons could survive in South Carolina and possibly even farther north” (Kessler 7). Also, the group reported that the snakes’ being from Florida may have played a factor in their deaths when cold weather hit South Carolina. Since previous studies about snakes correlate birth region with capabilities for tolerance to colder temperatures, experts feel that it is possible for…

The Rattlesnake is Frederic Hemington’s newest bronze work. This piece is located in the Sid Richardson Museum in Fort Worth, Texas. Hemington created this bronze work in 1904 to tell the dramatic story of the American West. The Rattlesnake is Frederic Hemington’s 12th and final bronze piece, however many consider it one of his best. Hemington created this piece later in his life; it shows the fierce motion of the bronco, which is comparable to the startled horse in A Taint on the Wind that was also painted the same year.…

They often eat Horned Lizards and other reptiles but, there is a documented case of a rattlesnake being killed by a Texas Horned Lizard’s spines while trying to ingest it (Vorhies 1948). Mammalian predators include infamous animals such as the coyote, bobcat, raccoon, and possum. This long list even includes invasive animals such as the feral pig. Like their avian and reptile counterparts these predators usually predate both the animal and their eggs (Hernandez et al 1997). Last but not least the biggest predators these animals face are human. This comes in many different forms such as urbanization, mass agriculture, introducing invasive species, and directly hunting or killing these animals. With their cryptic behavior discussed earlier Texas Horned Lizards are often run over along roadsides while thermo regulating (Moeller et al 2005). Hunting is historically known for causing the demise of several animals, but in today’s laws prevent this. In retrospect the popularity and nostalgia associated with hunting Bobwhite Quail and catching horned toads is what has created such an effort to preserve…

The ecosystem roles that prairie dogs play are rather significant. Prairie dogs are primary consumers and they are important food source of all prairie-living predators such as fox, ferrets, snakes, and owls. Certain animals' survival in the wild heavily depends on the prairie dogs as main food source, such as black-footed ferrets. (1) Not only prairie dogs provide food source to their predators, the burrows they build to shelter themselves also provide big impact on other animals. For an example, snakes can hibernate in their burrows during the winter and eat their pups. Prairie dog town, which consists of multiple tunnels, can even be considered as biological oasis, since it attracts large numbers of species for using them as food resource and utilize their burrows. Feral hogs have recently become a problem in middle Tennessee. Although these animals are not native to this area, it is believed that the hogs were brought in illegally for sport hunting. Although this move was ill advised, the wild hogs were trapped and brought into North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. If not controlled, the overpopulation of these animals will continue to cause extensive damage for residents. Wild hogs have continued to overpopulate areas and in an effort to find new land and areas of food sources, have continued to move west. These hogs are becoming a nuisance as far west as Wilson County in Tennessee.…

Chipmunks, among the lower end of the food chain, are omnivores. They eat grains, nuts, berries, seeds, mushrooms, insects, and salamanders but also run into competition along the way. Chipmunks are also hunted by animals that are natural habitants to this region. However, my mom and I started putting out birdseed constantly for animals to feed off of. The birdseed that we put out helps them because not too many other animals, besides birds, eat it. Although chipmunks are considered pests and bothersome, they actually help the environment by spreading seeds throughout the area. Chipmunks actually play an important role in the local eco system because they could potentially provide habitats for thousands of organisms.…
