Eclampsia is a well-known complication of pregnancy. This condition is characterized by an onset of seizures and convulsions in a woman with pre-eclampsia. The seizures usually present itself as the tonic clonic type and can last for up to about a minute. The pregnant woman develops hypertension and proteinuria before the convulsions occur. Some other signs to monitor for right before a seizure would be nausea, vomiting, headaches and cortical blindness. Similar to preeclampsia, eclampsia tends to occur in first time pregnancies and young mothers. Management of preeclampsia is critical to reduce the risk of eclampsia. There are a few primary goals to prevent this complication which includes: stopping and preventing convulsions, controlling hypertension, delivering the baby as soon as possible and monitoring and observing for the onset of multi organ failure.
