PND mostly occurs in women after their first pregnancy. Early detection of PND by the health professionals will improves the chances of a successful treatment to those women who suffer the illness. PND is a common health problem which often occurs during and after pregnancy. About 13 percent of pregnant women and new mothers have experience PND. Some women may not want to seek help and treatment for the fear of how other people may judge them. These women may now labelled by their illness and seen as part of a stereotyped group which held by individuals in society.
Women who experience PND will most likely withdraw from society and also isolate themselves from their family and friends. Also develop a loss of confidence in themselves and have low self- esteem which may lead to alcohol and drug abuse. Therefore, these women, their families, and the community need to be educated and become aware of the potential risk factors that can contribute to PND after giving birth. Women also need to open up to others, such as their partner, a friend, and their general practitioner or child health nurse, to talk about the symptoms they are experiencing. Nurses can also refer these women to a health support group, a counsellor or visit a nursing practitioner for advice.
