After reading the book, The Other Side, racism is an adult concept, not a kid’s concept. At the beginning of the story, the tone is very strict. Towards the end of the story, the tone is more uplifting and friendly. The author used the fence in story as a symbol. The audience in the story is the children reading the book. The author’s use of tone, symbolism, and an audience shapes the story. At the beginning of the story, the tone is very strict. Clover’s mom makes sure that she never crosses the fence. As does Annie’s mom. However, towards the end of the story, the tone is very uplifting and friendly. Clover and Annie are starting to become very good friends. The author in the story uses lots of symbolism. One symbol is the fence.
