Prendick Island
Edward Prendrick barely survives to the sinking of the ship Lady Vain escaping on a dinghy with two other guys. After some days, they were low in food, water, and sanity. Meanwhile, the two other guys fight each other and they fall out of the boat where a shark goes through them. Prendrick drifts for days, before being rescued by a passing ship, the Ipecacuanha.
In the ship, a man named Montgomery gives him the medical attention, and quickly both became good friends, but the same can’t be said for Captain Davis.
When Montgomery and Davis talk about Montgomery's animal cargo, Prendick unwisely chooses to side with the guy who isn't the captain of the ship he's currently residing on rent-free. This doesn't sit well with Davis, and once Montgomery and his cargo are off-loaded on the unnamed island, he immediately kicks Prendick to the ocean.

The book The Island at the Center of the World by Russell Shorto was very interesting and gave me a different view on history. I felt the story that was told was very intriguing but it did get confusing at times. There were parts in the book where he would discuss an important person like Adriaen Van der Donck for example in one chapter then he would jump to a new person in the next chapter and then Van der Donck would be mentioned again two chapters later. This was hard to follow because he would jump from person to person and mention many dates that it was hard to keep up with what he was saying. However, regarding his argument that Manhattan is what started America he does an excellent job at proving this. One example of this is “…in…

Annotation: Dr. Moreau is the first one in the book to say the theme that is constantly shown throughout the book. That man and animal will revert back to their primitive ways. Even though Moreau takes away their memory, changes genes, and teaches them as you would a human child, they change back to their old ways. It may be that in their original genes they still have, it contains behavioral or personality traits that decide how acts or thinks. Also for some, the instinct to rebel against the Law may make them revert back to the animal ways.…

Throughout his writing in Candide, Voltaire offers much commentary on the social structures, ideologies, and events present during his time. Voltaire constructs most of his characters in a highly exaggerated manner, creating highly caricaturized and often-absurd philosophies and viewpoints. Although this play was written in the 18th Century, many of the topics and parodies expressed through the hyperbolic characters are ageless in their applicability to many modern topics. In chapter five particularly, both modern and historical readers are provided with commentary and satire of certain topics and perspectives. Specifically, the lack of contributive action from Dr. Pangloss, Candide, and sailor in the face of adversity provides a demonstration of the dangers of excessive optimism and selfishness.…

In the article, “Who Killed Easter Island” by Jared Diamond he states that people can affect and destroy our environment and natural resources. Easter Island can be used as a warning that cultural and environmental dangers exist due to overexploitation. Although, civilizations have vanished from the island it still has a remaining mystery and history to its untouched landscape. Easter Island was formed out of an ancient volcanic eruption; the island is only sixty-four square miles with habitable land and subtropical weather that makes the soil fertile. Easter Island was name by the Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen, on Easter in 1722. Easter Island is famous for its tight-lipped statues that stand across the island, which were erected by the Rapa Nui people between the 10th and 16th centuries AD. These are ancient wonders of the world that are still being studied to get a full understanding of how and why these statues were created. From written history the explorer’s first impression of the island was that it was a waste because the people who lived on the island represented it as being of insufficient and ruthless to them. With all the current studies that have consumed the island many are fascinated with the history and abundance of Easter Island. Many questions have arisen to Easter Islands existence because the people who are putting time and effort are very interested and curious. They have come to conclusion that many of the natural resources of the island were used in order for the first settlers to survive from using the forests to gather food and build canoes and also using the ocean to fish and drink. Remains that have been left on the island have been from fish, porpoises, rats, birds from both the land and sea, and even seals have been linked to the food chain of the people of Easter Island. Researchers have also linked cannibalism to the people of Easter Islands’ meat…
