Gerald Ford was born on July 14, 1913 and was named Leslie Lynch King Jr. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska and is currently alive and living in Rancho Mirage, California.
As a child President Ford lived in Grand Rapids Michigan. He moved there when his parents were divorced at age 2. His mother, Dorothy Ford, got custody of him and married President Ford’s stepfather, Gerald Ford Sr. on February 1, 1916. Gerald R. Ford, Jr.’s name was not legally changed until December 3, 1935. After graduating High School, President Ford attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1931 and he graduated in 1935. He then went to Yale University to study law. President Ford married Elizabeth Bloomer Warren (aka Betty Ford)
on October 15, 1948. They settled down and had four children: Michael Gerald born March 14, 1950, John Gardner born March 16, 1952, Steven Meigs born May 19, 1956 and Susan Elizabeth born July 6, 1957. Gerald Ford is a Republican. He was Vice President of the United States under President Richard M. Nixon. He was picked by the House of Representatives to replace then Vice President Spiro Agnew after he resigned. President Ford’s Vice President was Nelson A. Rockefeller. President Ford was a United States President from 1974-1977.
He was the first President in history to be a non-elected President. He was picked because of his good character. He raised the spirits and hopes of the people who were not happy at the time with their government because of Watergate and other issues. President Ford offered a conditional amnesty to the men who refused to go to Vietnam when they were drafted. He was known during these years as someone who brought new openness to the White House and for how he turned the United States around for the better. Many historical events occurred when Gerald Ford was President. The biggest of these was Watergate. This is where President Nixon was caught illegally taping information and was forced to resign from the Presidency. South Vietnam fell to North Vietnam in 1975 ending the war there and the United States was having an economical slump which means that most people were having money problems.
