Ronald Reagan was the 40th President of the United States during 1981 to 1989. He was born in Illinois on February 6, 1911, and died on June 5, 2004, at the age of 93 years. President Reagan went to College and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and sociology. He started his career as an actor. He got started in politics in the 1950’s. When he first started in politics, he was a Democrat, but then later he became a Republican in 1962. Before he became President of the United States, he was the 33rd Governor of California in 1967 to 1975.
President Reagan ran for the Republican nomination twice and lost, but he finally won the nomination in 1980. In 1980, he won the President’s election when he defeated President Jimmy Carter. President Reagan also won in a landslide in 1984, and was the President for the next four years, from 1985 to 1989.
On March 30, 1981, after only 69 days in to his new Presidency, President Reagan was shot and wounded after an assassin attempt on his life. When at the hospital, he is known to have said to the surgeons treating him, “I hope you’re all Republicans.”
President Reagan is known for being heroic and peacefully helping to end the Cold War with the Soviet Union. He is remembered for one of the most famous quotes, “General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” The wall was torn down in November, 1989, and Communism fell with it. Both the United States and the Soviet Union agreed to reduce their nuclear weapons.
Finally, President Reagan’s history as President is known for his economics. His policies are known, even today, as "Reaganomics". This approach to the US economy is for smaller government, less regulations, more individual freedoms, reduced tax rates, and reduced government spending.
