Why Is Ronald Reagan Anti-Communist
“How do you tell a Communist? Well, it's someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It's someone who understands Marx and Lenin.” Ronald Wilson Reagan was the 40th President of The United States and 33rd Governor of California. Reagan represented the conservative Republican Party. Before his political career, Reagan acted in over 50 Hollywood films. As a child, he agreed with the Democratic Party, but as he grew older, he became a Republican. Reagan ran three times to become President of the Republican Party, and the third time, 1980, he won both the nomination and presidential elections. During his presidency, he cut taxes and increased the money spent on defense. While he was a President, the whole country experienced an economic upswing, which is mainly the reason why he was re-elected in 1984. Reagan strongly opposed the spread of communism and he tried to defeat the Soviet Union by speeding up the arms race. During his second term, he started to become closer with the Soviet Premier Mihail Gorbatšov. Even though he was known as optimistic, …show more content…
In November, 1986, Lebanese magazine Ash-Shiraa reported that U.S has sold weapons to Iran secretly just to get the hostages freed. A plane that was transferring weapons from U.S. was shot down in Nicaragua. November, 21, Oliver North and his secretary started to shred all the documents that said they and numerous of others were involved in the Iran-Contra Affair. Reagan even tried to deny his involvement to the whole scandal by saying that “A few months ago, I told the American people I did not trade arms for hostages. My heart and my best intentions still tell me that’s true, but the facts and evidence tell me it is not.” This shows, how two-faced and untrustworthy he actually was since he could not even admit the

The Iran Contra Affair was an action not actually approved by the U.S. Congress. Ronald Reagan put in his best efforts to keep communism to a minimum. So, he’s done everything in his power to keep helping Nicaragua, even though it’s going against American laws. He decides to support the Contras who are rebelling against the Cuban backed Sandinistas, which resulted in one of the most talked about scandals in the late 1900’s. In a report from the Public Broadcast Service, they mention that Reagan says the Contras were, “the moral equivalent to our Founding Fathers”. Unfortunately for a very engaged Reagan, a Boland Amendment was made to make funding for Nicaragua difficult. Then, a few years later a second Boland Amendment was made even stronger…

It is that Ronald Reagan did not have a firm grasp of world issues, history, or geography. When Reagan told French president Fran `cois Mitterrand, a socialist, that communism and socialism were the same, Mitterrand wondered, “what planet is that man living on?” Superficial and often mistaken about elementary facts, Reagan acted more on instinct that on analysis. Expressing the reformist message to common in U.S. foreign policy, he liked to quote Tom Paine of the American Revolution; “we have it in out power to begin the world over again,” Reagan stated that the Soviet Union was an “evil empire,” that would “ commit any crime,” “lie” and “cheat” to achieve a communist world. Because he attributed Third World disorders to Soviet intrigue, the president declared the Reagan Doctrine; the United States would openly support anticommunist movements, “freedom fighters” wherever they were battling the Soviets or Soviet backed governments. Under this doctrine, The CIA funneled aid to insurgents in Afghanistan, Nicaragua, Angola, and elsewhere. In open defiance of the sovereignty of those nations, Reagan worked to overthrow their governments.…

When the Lebanese newspaper "Al-Shiraa" printed an exposé on the clandestine activities in November 1986, Reagan went on television and vehemently denied that any such operation had occurred. He retracted the statement a week later, insisting that the sale of weapons had not been an arms-for-hostage deal. Despite the fact that Reagan defended the actions by virtue of their good intentions, his honesty was doubted. Polls showed that only 14 percent of Americans believed the president when he said he had not traded arms for hostages.…

Communism was slowly building up in the time after the Vietnam War. Soviet Union and the US were splitting up their alliance and most countries were still bouncing back after the recession. Ronald Reagan one the most iconic presidents to sit in the oval office was president at the time. Reagan’s skills got tested from the very start. Few days into his first term there was a huge bombing in Lebanon and just days after that a small Caribbean island started to lose its socialist views and gained communist ones. Reagan believed that dealing with the small island, Grenada, was equal value as dealing with the bombing. Much of the US was tentative on supporting their leader and his military after the US involvement in Vietnam. All faith in the US…

Marx was a utopian and wanted a classless society. He believed that with such a society crime would disappear, the span of life would increase and life would be generally better. Marx called this a “leap from slavery into freedom” (61). This type of “utopian government system” may have been okay by itself. Unfortunately, Marx saw religion as “the opiate of the masses.” The Soviets wanted complete freedom from religion, and in doing so, it resulted a take-over from the state. Reagan saw this and wanted quite the opposite for the Soviets and for America. He claimed that this war was a simple and old quarrel. It was a “struggle between those of us who believe that man has the dignity and sacred right and the ability to choose and shape his own destiny and those who do not so believe.” Also, he believed the main difference in these two countries, worlds apart in beliefs, was those who “believe in the sanctity of individual freedom and those who believe in the supremacy of the state”…

Ronald Reagan has been consistently viewed as one of the top five best Presidents in the history of the United States. Reagan’s time as the Commander in Chief yielded a plethora of prodigious results. Reagan played an enormous role in revitalizing the GOP after it had lost some credibility during the Watergate scandal. In addition, Reagan spurred an economic boom that lasted for two decades with his economic policy that was later termed Reaganomics. These policies involved heavy deregulation, domestic spending restraint, and significant tax reform which included both simplifying the tax code and cutting taxes.…

Naturally, there would be a search for those that were involved and took part in the operation, in which it was soon brought to light and led to the charging of about "14 Reagan administration officials and staff, including Oliver North"(Wikipedia.com). Soon enough, in 1987, President Reagan disclosed that the operations involving the Iran Contra affair had indeed been done and his administration had been involved. However, Reagan noted to the public that he was unknowing of the entire incident and that it had happened without his knowledge. On the other hand, lieutenant Oliver north claimed a significant portion of fault, regarding the incident. And later, a report later came from Congress, noting the subject of the Iran Contra Affair, which consisted of criticism towards the actions of the operation, yet ultimately conveyed that President Reagan had not been indicted or found guilty(umbc.edu). However, one figure who had been charged heavily regarding the scandal was Oliver North, who received sanctions of which consisted of a large fine, a couple of years of probation and a lengthy amount of community service work (Tindall, 1428). However, although Reagan insisted upon denying the fact of knowledge on the operation, Oliver North spoke out and stated that he, as well as his Vice President, Bush, did in fact know. And as a result, Reagan's reputation had been stained…

He was the leader for the Soviet Union during the cold war. Reagan touches on this because he wants America to see that he is not the only one to say the government is weak, because so does Khrushchev. He states the Khrushchev heard voices from this side. The voices were saying "peace at any price" or "better Red than dead," or as one commentator put it, he'd rather "live on his knees than die on his feet." ( Reagan ). Reagan makes people question is that what peace requires. He then says “ those voices do not speak for the rest of us”. ( Reagan ). Those voices were higher up officials that are suppose to be the voice for the people. What voice did the people have in that war? They would not see the same views as they do. The people want their family whole once more. They do not want to bury loved ones. Reagan is then starting to persuade the people to have a say in how the government looks for…

In the years following the end of World War II, the American population's attention was diverted to one threat: that of a Communist takeover by Soviet Russia. The Eisenhower Administration responded to the crisis by promoting government investments into defense systems and education; such responses did not completely eliminate the fear of a Communist takeover. As a whole, communism was the direct antithesis of the American principles of democracy and free-enterprise. Communism promoted social, political, and global equality under the rigid control of a central government. Specific reactions both by the general American population and the Eisenhower Administration will help identify the effects of the threat of communism in the United States.…
