Price Hike
India is facing many serious problems nowadays, but the problem of price-rise is the most serious one. It is very common these days. The prices of essential commodities are going higher day by day.

India is passing through a very hard time nowadays. The problem of prise-rise has become very serious. The government is unable to control the prices of necessary goods. The rise in prices is natural in a developing county like India. But when it goes out of control, it causes great difficulties for the masses. If the problem is not tackled in a proper way, it may take a serious turn.

There are many causes responsible for rise in prices. Such rise in prices might be due to natural calamities like floods, earthquakes and famine and also wars. The three wars between India and Pakistan and one between Indian and China since. 1962 have largely affected Indian economy. The other reasons of the soaring prices may be bribery, corruption, black-marketing, hoarding, smuggling, profiteering and many other anti-national and anti-social tendencies. The pressure of population growth is also one of its causes. The most important factor which is responsible for price-rise is the mentality of the people to become millionaire in a night.

High prices have very bad effect on the people. These rising prices increase the cost of living. It is deplorable that a small group of businessmen earn a lot of money by unfair means of hoarding essential goods. Owing to this tendency a vast majority of people have to suffer untold hardships. If the present position continues, the middle-class people will not be able to maintain their position in society.

The government is aware of this problem. A number of measures have been taken by the government. It is also trying to increase the production of essential goods. The distribution of these goods has also been made fair and effective. The burden of taxes on the middle-class has been lessened. But rising prices can be checked only when the

These prices, in turn, are fixed by the forces of supply and demand of a respective commodity. Only people with sufficient control over resources, and wealth, in particular have the privilege to purchase goods and services, often priced very highly in a free-market economy. The prices, which are the only allocating and distributing factor in this economy, place the poor in an unenviable situation who are gradually thrown out of the system without any access to wealth and the basic needs of subsistence. Furthermore, if the demand is short of the supply of a respective commodity, the price will fall as opposed to a price rise when the supply is inadequate to meet…

The article states that the price index gained larger than expected .3 percent, which adds to the inflation anxiety on Wall Street (Freilich). Inflation, however, tends to hurt the poor far more than it does the rich. For example, if a woman retires with four thousand dollars saved up, and the cost of a decent living is five thousand, then she only has eighty percent of what she needs to survive. Then, a year later, if there is one hundred percent inflation, then the necessary cost of living becomes ten thousand dollars. Even if that woman still had four thousand dollars, she would now have only forty percent of what she needed.…

Parkin (2012: 522) described inflation as “a persistently rising price level” and price level as “the average level of prices, and the value of money”. A price increase would cause people to buy less, and a decrease in demand for products would cause prices to fall. Parkin (2012) said that expected inflation is promoting a healthy and a strong economy. However, if the burst of inflation is unanticipated, it brings big problems and risks. Employees are worse off because their earned income to get less than before due to price hike. Conversely, employers receive higher profits and better return on their investment, which leads to an increase in investment, production boom and real GDP rises with lower unemployment rate. However, this situation is temporary, spending cools and investment drops, following a fall in GDP and rising unemployment rate. Unexpected inflation redistributes wealth between borrowers and lenders. The borrower pays the fix rate loan with lesser dollars and brings an impact to lenders such as banks and other financial institutions. In summary, we can not wait macroeconomic to correct itself and the government should take measures to control inflation, ease economic uncertainty and restore economic stability.…

In the next paragraphs I will explain to you why I think this. Rising the price when demand is low is necessary in order to keep items in stock and on the shelves. Without rising prices many consumers would be in need of crucial supplies such as water, food, and generators. Although many think it is wrong, it is actually only helping others. It may cost more, but at least there will be supplies left.…

Moving on to my first point prices are continuously getting higher. The average gas price for unleaded fuel in Virginia on July 7 2009 was 2.61$, a pound of bacon in July 2009 cost between 2/3$ and since then it has doubled in prices and now costs 5/6$. A kilowatt hour on average cost now cost 1.67 in July 2009 they cost almost .40$ less a 1.23$. These are only a few examples of the huge increase of prices on everything. People who were making the same amount of money 3 ½ years ago are making that same amount of money and can only afford around half of what they used to. A report from www.cnn.inflation.com shows that the huge increase in prices has led to a huge increase of people who are now classified as living in poverty. We need to increase the amount we pay these workers so that not only can we help balance the economy, but so we can help people get back on their feet.…

According to this, CPI-based point-to-point annual urban aggregate consumer price index remained at 7.0 percent in mid-March 2011. The inflation rate for the same period in the previous year was 10.7 percent. Increase in the production of monsoon and dry season crops due to favourable climatic condition, and decline in price of food grains in India has caused the decline in food and beverages group thereby bringing improvement in the overall consumer inflation rate.…

In, any cost hike, one common factor amongst all items, is “Fuel”. If fuel price goes up, price for everything will go up. Simple way to explain is for example, if all vegetables, and things of basic needs are exported from state to state in trucks, than due to raising cost of fuel, transporting company will raise it’s price. Even though farmer who grows vegetables does not hike price to start with, but due to cost of fuel, which is involved for transporting vegetables from farmer to the markets/shops goes up. So, market buyers will have to pay more to transport company, and to cover that, they will have to hike rates of vegetables they selling. In this sense, every person who is either a seller or a buyer, they both have to earn more to cover their costs or to maintain their lifestyle, so all in their businesses, or professions, will raise their prices. Every man, rich or poor gets affected by it in this way. Families who earns well, will be able to manage it but what about common people like labor…

A combination of both cost-push and demand-pull factor exist in india. However cost-push factors are more apparent in the post liberalization period. Prices in india basically increase due to an increase in petroleum product prices, primarily because petroleum is vital input in many manufactured items and also an essential fuel for road transport, aviation and even the railways. As transportation costs rise, the prices of other products tend to rise in general. A noteworthy instance of price rise is the demand-pull factors that led to a steep rise in the price of onions in the year 2000, causing an artificial shortage in the market.…

When inflation spikes, the single focus of the government becomes controlling inflation. This is not how mature market economies work. In all mature market economies, the task of controlling inflation - and only the task of controlling inflation - is placed with the central bank. In India, the onus to control the situation of inflation is upon the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the banking Industry. Our paper aim is to present the role that the RBI and the banking Industry plays in controlling the Inflation, the measures adopted in overcoming the negative effects of Inflation, the mechanisms and the policies through which the Central Bank seeks to control the amount of credit flowing in the market, whether these mechanisms used by the RBI has passed its prime and thus now the RBI needs to take up a holistic approach to the same. We would then deal very briefly with the suggestions that may shed some light on what could be the possible steps RBI and the banking industry could take to control rising prices. We find that the practice adopted by the Central bank right now seems to be an ostrich approach. We understand it clearly that the reason that we have inflation is because the economic status and mindsets of the people of India are advancing. Indian consumer is no longer afraid to spend tomorrow’s money today. The average Indian consumer has reached a comfortable economic position where he now starts to demand products and services which were earlier not available to him. This is an indicator of an improved standard of living. But this should not be considered as a disadvantage. The problem here is that the country’s infrastructure is not capable of meeting these requirements. But, instead of giving any attention to the supply factors, by simply lowering money and credit in the market, the RBI is artificially pushing demand down. It is stifling the needs and requirements of the consumers and is…
