Pride and Prejudice Being Popular Today Rough Draft There are many reasons why Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is still popular and relevant today. Woman respect that Elizabeth was an independent and smart woman, social classes still get in the way of relationships, and everyone still loves a Cinderella story like the one in the book. These three reasons are why people still love the book even after 200 years. The book has a lot of things that people can relate to, respect, and enjoy at the same time. “A real woman makes her own decisions in life. She’s responsible, and doesn’t follow but she leads. She’s always about accomplishing goals, and she never settles for anything less because she’s a woman, and nothing more” –Bryan Burden. This quote shows what a real, independent woman should act like. In Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth is just like this. She doesn’t settle for anything for things just because everyone else does, and she also very smart and intelligent with her decisions. A lot of woman these days can really relate to Elizabeth, they want to be independent like she was. Since many women don’t get married in today’s world, some of them want to feel like they don’t need a man, just like Elizabeth didn’t desperately need a man. Because women respect and can relate to Elizabeth, the book stays popular and relevant. Something that happened in Pride and Prejudice that happens a lot in the 21st century is the problem with social classes in relationships. People from different social classes still go through relationships today. As people read the book, they see that being in different social classes worked for Elizabeth and Darcy. Being able to relate to a certain situation really draws your attention to the thing you relate to. The relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth was one of the main points in the book, showing how a relationship from different social classes can still work out. People want to know it’s not just about how much

    Of all the books I’ve read throughout high school, I feel that Pride and Prejudice epitomizes politics the most. Throughout the story, there’s this class struggle that manifests itself between the lower, middle, and upper class. Members of the upper class, the Bingleys and the Darcys, are portrayed as being “snobbish” and “prideful” people, and they aren’t afraid to flaunt their wealthy status to others. The Bennets, on the other hand, are part of the middle class and are constantly reminded of their inferiority to the upper class by specific members of the upper class. For example, Catherine De Bough, who attempted to prevent Elizabeth from marrying her nephew, Mr. Darcy, so their family’s reputation wouldn’t be tarnished, or Miss Bingley, who constantly degraded Elizabeth and Jane for attracting more successful men despite their lower social status.Then there’s the people of the lower class like Wickham, whose one goal is to assimilate with the upper class by marrying a woman who exudes wealthiness. Despite this inter-class struggle, Jane and Elizabeth both end up marrying higher class men, challenging the notion that in-class marriage is the only acceptable way to find one’s significant other.…

    Darcy is the character most often associated with pride and Elizabeth Bennett with prejudice. Ironically the novel was originally called ‘First Impressions’ an aspect Darcy seems to lack originally. Understanding the world can be perceived in many different aspects; literally or figuratively. The protagonists; Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy capture our attention from the beginning of the novel. Austen is able to contradict the patriarchal society that existed in the nineteenth century, as she builds Elizabeth to be rational, strong and independent. Women were mainly seen in this time to entertain yet Elizabeth did not carry these traits.
