Primarily Referent Power
The course concept most in line with hard work and care is the bases of power, primarily referent power. Referent power is the ability to lead subordinates because they admire and respect you. By working hard and putting thought and care into their work, a leader can gain this admiration from his subordinates. Once a leader has this referent power, he or she can leverage this power using different influence tactics, such as inspirational appeal, to get their subordinates to follow their lead (Raven, 1993). This leverage of power and use of influence tactics can ideally get a commitment from the unit to work harder and care about what they produce (Miller, 2015). When we interact with someone on a daily basis, there are bound to be traits or tendencies that annoy us to no end. I am one of those people that has a hard time ignoring these annoyances. Last year, I had a falling out with my roommates over these annoyances. There were things that I was doing, such as turning on the light at night to take out my contacts, which would annoy my roommates. They would also annoy me in small ways, such as playing music through their speakers instead of headphones. None of us had any common consideration for the others, and that resulted in our room failing SAMI and almost giving us all company boards. If any one of us took the high road and tried to consider the other roommates’ feelings, than we would have been able to find a middle ground and avoid the catastrophic meltdown that …show more content…
One of the four components required of a transformational leader is individualized consideration. Individualized consideration is knowing people and catering to their individual needs through appropriate relationships. A transformational leader is a leader who creates a lasting impact on the organization and the people around them. To do this, they need to have the respect of their unit, respect that is garnered by identifying with individual members in the unit. A transformation leader needs to have a good moral character, character that can be improved by thinking of others and making small adjustments necessary to make the relationships between them run smoother (Banks, 2015).
Common consideration also applies to emotional intelligence as well, again in the empathy component along with the self-regulation component. Being aware of another’s feelings is empathy, and then making the changes necessary to foster the relationship is the self-regulation. By thinking before they act, a leader can employ what they learned about different individuals and pick the right course of action (Goleman,

    With the publication of Daniel Goleman’s book Emotional Intelligence in 1995, the business world got an answer to a question that had been plaguing it for decades: “Why did some people of a high IQ struggle at managing teams while other leaders of lower IQ excel at it”? Goleman asserted that the traditional measurement of IQ (intelligence quotient) was not enough to determine a good leader. Schools and universities concentrated on developing the cognitive and analytical part of the brain, while the teaching of how the emotional side of the brain worked was ignored. Goleman defined this “emotional intelligence” of a human being as a set of competencies that distinguish how one manages feelings and interacts with others. These emotional intelligence competencies are divided into two categories: personal and social. Personal competencies are how we manage our self and our own feelings, and social competencies are how we manage our inter-personal relationships. There are three basic personal competencies: knowing one’s emotions, managing emotions, and motivating one’s self. The two basic social competencies are recognizing emotions in others and handling relationships. Mastering these competencies, in addition to having sufficient IQ intelligence, makes for a truly effective leader. Thankfully for all of us, Goleman asserts that emotional intelligence can be obtained by understanding what the five competencies are and then developing one’s skills in using them.…
