1.1 Summarise entitlement and provision for early years education
As part of the Every Child Matters agenda all children aged 3 years old and 4 years old are entitled to free early year’s part time education. Children are entitled to 15 hours education a week and 38 weeks out of the year. The government funds the local authorities who distribute the funds across the local community to ensure that every child receives up to two years of free education before reaching mandatory school age.

1.2 Explain the characteristics of the different types of schools in relation to educational stage(s) and school governance
There are many different types of mainstream state schools and also Independent schools. Mainstream state schools are funded by the government through the local governing bodies, they are known as maintained schools and all have to follow the National Curriculum. Types of mainstream school include:
Community schools
Community schools are owned and run by the local authorities. In Northern Ireland community schools are also run by the Education and Library board.
Foundation and Trust schools
The difference between a foundation school and a trust school is foundation schools are run by their own governing body. Whereas Trust schools although still a type of foundation school, rely on charitable partnerships with outside investors and businesses.
Due to foundation schools being run by their own governing body the buildings and the land in which the school is built upon is also owned by the governing body or charitable foundation. The admission policy into a foundation school is also determined by the national governing body in consultation with the local education authority.

Voluntary schools
There a two different types of voluntary schools; Voluntary-aided schools and Voluntary-controlled schools.
Voluntary-aided schools are generally religious or faith schools but anyone can apply to attend these schools. They are run by
