In the essay I will try to make sure we brightly understand the differences between primordalist and instrumentalist approach. By understanding these approaches we can also explain how these approaches use on the situation today in our society. I will be explain the the comparison with provided example using my friend’s background as the Bajau’s ethnic also known as Jomoh Samah group. She have to adobe both of this approach in the way to maintain her own ethnic and at the same time use her own privileges of the Bumiputera of Sabah and Sarawak which is same as the Malay privileges.
Basically, every people have their own identity as their background. Every ethnic have their own ideology to guide their life. Each ethnic group is identifying through the same common heritage, language, culture including religion and an ideology that stresses common ancestry or endogamy. Similarity of that ethnic was belonging to the ethnic group.
In the way to study about ethnic identity, we have to understand the primodalist approach which is focus on the primodial ties to create ethnicity. “Primodalist approach believe that ethnic identity and attachment are given a priori, ab origine and cause sui, are underived prior to experience and interaction. Ethnic feeling are overpowering and coercive. If an individual is a member of an ethnic he/she necessarily fells a certain attachment to that group. Ethnicity is essentially a question of emotion or affect.” (Paolo Roseano 2000:1)
Instrumentalist approach which is dominant nowadays, maintain that ethnics are constructed by rational actors who calculate their objective interest. It also focuses on individual identity that has interest largely in material and political decision.
