Part III
Answer the following questions in 150 to 250 words each about the religious group you selected:
• How does your selected religious group differ from other religious groups (such as in their beliefs, worship practices, or values)?
I chose Jehovah’s Witnesses, I do not know a lot about them.
I do know that they a lot of them do not smoke or drink. They frown on sex before marriage. Sex before marriage is a common thing these day. I know they worship twice a week around here. They differ because other religions drink and smoke. They do not frown on sex before marriage as bad. They all believe that there is life after death, except for the Jehovah’s Witnesses do not, that once you are dead you are dead. I know they do not celebrate any holiday. They do not believe you need to celebrate anything for any reason. They do not associate with anything to do with the holidays. Where most of the other religions celebrate our normal holidays, I know some of the other ones do not celebrate Halloween believing it is the devils
holiday.
• What has been the experience of your selected religious group with others that do not share its beliefs or practices?
Jehovah’s Witnesses beliefs are different than the others is that they worship things that no one else does. They do practice no sex before marriage. They do not live with their girlfriends or boyfriends until they are married. They do not participate with any type of drugs or partying. They believe that you do not need to celebrate holidays to show you care about your religion. Jehovah’s Witnesses do not always practice their beliefs in a church they have a worship hall, and they also do it out of people’s houses. They can do over the phone conferences to practice their beliefs. Jehovah’s Witnesses do not have to have meetings on a certain day like other do on Sundays, they do it whenever they can and as often as they can. Some do not even talk to people outside of their religion. Which I see being harsh and not something easy to do.
• In what ways has the religious group you selected contributed to American culture?
I do not feel the Jehovah’s Witnesses contribute to the American culture. They do not really adapt to the American culture. They do not participate with any of the American cultures and celebrations. They have their way of living and do not associate with anyone who does not share their beliefs. They are shunned for it, in some cases. They have their own culture and to me it does not fit into the normal typical American culture. The Jehovah’s Witnesses have been around a long time and they will be around for much more time as long as they keep on believing in their religion. No matter if they contribute to the American culture or not it is what they believe that matters to them.
• Provide specific examples of prejudice or discrimination your selected religious group has experienced.
Some examples I can give about Jehovah’s Witnesses is that they are lectured about drinking. They do not take to it very likely. They do not allow you to live with your boyfriend or your girlfriend. I know they look down on you if you have children without being married. My one friend’s mom started to practice being a Jehovah’s Witness and she no long speaks to her because for the simple fact she has kids without being married and her and her boyfriend live together. She also lectures her because they drink and party once in awhile and that she does not attend any of their meetings. They do not celebrate birthdays and my friend’s kids always ask their grandma to go to their birthday parties and she tell them no she does not believe in a party for your birth, which upsets the kids.
• What were the sources of this prejudice or discrimination?
They are discriminated because Jehovah’s Witnesses do not believe in holidays and that they do not do a lot of the normal activities other religions do. The source is other people who do not believe in things the way they do. People pretend they are not home when they come to their house to share their beliefs. People often slam the door in their face when they stop. I tell them I am not interested and explain to them I have my own beliefs. I still take their paper and sometimes I do read over them, but honestly most of the time I just throw it away. They are not discriminated as much as they used to be people have come to the understanding that everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and religion. Overall they are not as frown on as much as they used to be in their religion.
• Does what you’ve learned about this religious group help you understand it? In what ways?
What I have learnt does help we understand a little better than I did before. I do not understand why they try to use guilt and fear with their members to keep them around. I understand that what they do them feel is right in god’s eyes and that they must maintain that order to be accepted by him. I also do not see how if someone break one of their “rules” will no long be allowed to worship with them. It is hard to believe that they will not allow any blood transfusing done on the adult or the children; they see it is not right and it is just like eating blood that is forbidden in their book. I do not understand a lot that they do they do not agree with organ transplants or vaccinations which are required by the state for school age children. I have learnt a lot that I did not know but I do not understand why they do some of the things they do.
Answer the following questions in 150 to 250 words each about the ethnic group you selected:
• How does your selected ethnic group differ from other ethnic groups (such as differences in ancestry, language, or culture)?
The ethnic group I chose was “black”, they have an African background. They differ from the other ethnic groups by where they came from. The Africans came from Africa and they have their own way of living and their own culture. They sometimes have their own language and accents then the other ones to not have the same type of accents. The blacks became Americans just like all the other ones have but the black have been through more than the others. Look on how the white people used to treat them; they were treated like animals and made to do whatever we wanted them to. They were our slaves and had to do what we said or they were beaten, and starved. They had to work for nothing, they did not get paid and even their children had chores to do, their wives we treated the same way they had to do house work and the men did the farming and other outside work that needed to be done.
• What has been your selected ethnic group’s experience with other ethnic groups?
The ethnic group I chose was Blacks African descent. They experienced a lot more than any of the other ethnic groups they were treated the worst out of any of the others.
• In what ways has the ethnic group you selected contributed to American culture?
The blacks, African descent have contributed to American culture for how they used to be way back in the day. The blacks have came along way and have taught Americans so much. They taught us that they were the same as the whites and work just as hard. Look now we have the first black president and we look up to more blacks then we did two hundred years ago. -80
• Identify some specific examples of prejudice or discrimination that your selected ethnic group has experienced historically.
To identify some specific examples of prejudice and discrimination that the Blacks have experience in history is pretty easy to do. Look at how they were discriminated for the color of their skin, they were out casted and they had their own bathrooms and their own schools so the white did not have to deal with them. They had to sit in the back of the bus and were not allowed to talk to the whites unless spoken to. The black children were slaves they did not play with the white kids. They had to work while the white children got to play and to learn more than they did. The children even got discriminated for something they had no clue why. They were brought into the world not knowing what was going on and they just wanted to be friends with the white kids. There was a lot of reasons they were discriminated in our history.
• What were the sources of this prejudice or discrimination?
The sources of the prejudice and discrimination were mainly from the white people. The black people were treated poorly, by the white people and anyone who thought they were better than them. The white people were the source of the discrimination no matter what was done they were not liked.
• Does what you’ve learned about this ethnic group help you understand it? How?
What I have learnt about this ethic group is a lot that I already knew and was taught in school growing you they became a big part on American History. What I do know if that the blacks have came a long way to get where they are today and what I have learnt has helped me understand. They do what they need to do to get by and to survive. They have the same responsibilities as everyone else and that they have their own beliefs still.
Part IV
Answer the following questions in 150 to 250 words each:
• How are the prejudice and discrimination experienced by your selected religious group and ethnic group similar? The discrimination that the Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Blacks have experience is that they were both out casted for what they thought was right. They do not and were not allowed to associate with anyone outside of their culture no matter what. They both had their own rules and their own way they have to live.
• How are they different?
They are different because the Jehovah’s Witnesses will not change and they will still have what they believe in. Their rights will not change because it is how they practice their religion. The blacks have come along way and they are treated like anyone else. They have got more power than they used to have and they have more options and freedom to do what they want and what they feel is right for them to survive.
• Can you draw any conclusions about discrimination from this comparison?
I cannot come to conclusions about discrimination in the comparison because they how they want to live and that is their choice. I feel that the blacks are just like anyone man or woman and they have to right to do what they want. The Jehovah’s Witnesses have their own way to live and do not want to live the way the rest of us choose.
