Religious and Ethnic Groups
Religious groups are all similar to each other, but they do have their differences as well. Jehovah’s Witnesses is one that comes to mind when I think of a religious groups that is different. They stand out to me because of things I have seen or read about. Jehovah’s Witnesses will go to people’s home at they want to spread the word about their religion. Jehovah’s Witnesses followers find that going to people’s home is a way to honor their religion. Jehovah’s Witnesses worship God and believe he does not lie and everything that is in the bible will come true. I also know that they do not celebrate any of the holidays such as Easter the way I do with the Easter bunny as that is not what Easter is about. Christmas is the same as they do not believe you should lie and say a gift came from Santa Claus, and birthdays are acknowledge but not celebrated. Jehovah’s Witnesses feel that a celebration should only be about God and not oneself. I tried to become friends with a classmate in high school as she seemed very nice, but did not have any friends, but we never got close as friends. A few years after high school I ran into her as she began to work where I was at. We recognized each other and became very good friends. Later I realized that the reason we did not become close in high school was because she was a Jehovah’s Witnesses and said she was not allowed to associate herself with anyone that did not follow that religion.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses differ from more traditional Christian based religions, insofar as they execute an aggressive public service and outreach/conversion campaign. In corroboration of this, in the last 10 years, they have published and distributed over 20 billion Bible-based literature pamphlets, usually through door to door proselytizing. Not some, all members that proclaim to be Jehovah’s Witness must participate in this very important aspect of their faith. In addition to their hard line outreach campaign, Jehovah’s Witnesses also stand out from their fellow Christian counterparts by attending their church, called Kingdom Hall, many times per week, and also vehemently oppose the celebration of traditional American holidays, as well as birthdays. Arguably, the most controversial aspect of their belief system is the prohibition of its members to participate in any government, civil or military service; members are not even allowed to vote. These actions, which fall outside of America’s traditional social construct, are what have caused Jehovah’s Witnesses to be viewed as cult like, and one of the more fringe outgrowths of Christianity.…

I do know that they a lot of them do not smoke or drink. They frown on sex before marriage. Sex before marriage is a common thing these day. I know they worship twice a week around here. They differ because other religions drink and smoke. They do not frown on sex before marriage as bad. They all believe that there is life after death, except for the Jehovah’s Witnesses do not, that once you are dead you are dead. I know they do not celebrate any holiday. They do not believe you need to celebrate anything for any reason. They do not associate with anything to do with the holidays. Where most of the other religions celebrate our normal holidays, I know some of the other ones do not celebrate Halloween believing it is the devils…

My selected religious group is Jehovah’s Witnesses. Jehovah’s Witnesses differ from other religious groups in their beliefs, worship practices and values in many ways. Some beliefs of Jehovah 's Witnesses place this religion apart from other Christian denominations, such as limiting the number of people who will go to heaven to 144,000, denying the Trinity doctrine, and rejecting the traditional Latin cross (Zavada, 2013). Jehovah Witnesses have different beliefs when it comes to communion, the Bible, Baptism,…

They are discriminated against in very different ways. For example, the long beard and long ringlet curls in the men’s hair in the Amish community, this is normal for them and if for some reason you don’t or can’t grow it or it gets cut off you are likely to be shunned by the whole community until it all grows back. Most people in society today like the short hair and clean shaven face but with the Amish it quite the opposite. So, therefore they are judged and made fun of, called names, etc. With Hinduism, it’s just the opposite the men shave their heads and wear only robe type clothing. Because they look different they are judged and assumed to be “different”.…

When I think about the ethnic group I identify with the most, I would have to say classify myself as a White person. I have adapted White ways or the ways of my family. I don’t have very many cultural beliefs or views to follow. On the other hand, I am one-quarter Cherokee Indian. My father’s mother was a full-blood Cherokee. I’ve always been intrigued by this culture and the challenges and discrimination the tribe had faced throughout their development.…

Their religious practices are generally similar to others they worship God, pray to him, and think that all things good come from him. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe God can not lie therefore what the bible says will come true and earth will someday be cleansed of all the “wickedness”. In addition, most religions do some kind of baptizing when a child is young however, Jehovah’s Witnesses only baptise those who want to serve as a Jehovah’s Witness.…

Growing up in a diverse community has its advantages. It is amazing to see people trying to guess each other’s race and ethnicity. Innocent as it may seem at a young age to do this, it may have been the precursor to feelings towards the opposite race. The United States is a melting pot of different races coming together for one purpose – to have a good life. This means raising a family, having a good job, buying a car and home without fear of being discriminated against. In the stories by two diverse women shows how race and ethnicity played a large part in developing their lives.…
