1. 550-600 word essay on the ethnic group that you selected:
What is the name of the ethnic group and background that describes their creation in the US? Creation forms required from Racial and Ethnic groups, Chapter 1: annexation, migration, colonization?
1a.Introductory paragraph, 50 words, includes an opening sentence, informational sentences, and closing sentence, which provides a smooth transition to the first body paragraph.
The ethnic group that chose is the Amish. Amish people reside now, mostly in Pennsylvania. They are a group of traditionalist Christian church fellowships. They have Anabaptist origins. Early in the 18th century many of the Amish people immigrated to Pennsylvania for several reasons. The Amish to this day still reside mostly in the Pennsylvania area and live an extremely simple life style.
What are the linguistic, political, social, economic, religious, and familial conventions, statuses of this group and other categories that will educate you about this ethnic group? Requires citation.
1b. Body: Developing paragraphs, 50-70 words each; contain a topic sentence that states the main idea for the paragraph that and will provide information on each area. Requires one citation.
Some of the social conventions that will educate us about the Amish are their versions dress and lack of the use of modern equipment. For example they refuse to use any type of modern technology such as cars and computers. Instead of a motorized vehicle they choose to use a horse and buggy for their transportation to and from places. They have no electricity, they use candles or oil burning lamps for light and fireplace stoves for cooking. Their way of dressing also helps to distinguish who they are. The women are only allowed to wear dresses and petty coats, while the men have to wear black pants suits and hats. The women are also required to wear a bonnet type hat at all times. Neither the men nor the women have the independence or freedom of expression as we do as Americans, therefore it tends to set them apart from the ‘norm” of today’s society.
A few political and economic conventions that set this group apart are thing like, the fact that they are by their own set of rules and standards, for the most part. They what is called “The Ordnung”, it is a set of rules or laws for each Amish community. Contained within this are the religious and civil rules, both of which are to be obeyed at all times. The Amish communities are not centrally governed, this meaning that each Amish group can make their own rules to be abided by, by that community.
Name and describe/explain 1 way the ethnic group you selected contributed to American culture?
1c. Body: least 2 paragraphs, first contains 1 required main points that will be developed in the support paragraphs. Developing paragraphs, 50-70 words each, contain a topic sentence that states the main idea for the paragraph that will describe to explain the contribution.
The religious difference is probably the largest difference from “the norm”. They keep to an extremely strict set of rules set by their “God” that everyone is required to adhere to or they will be exiled (meaning banished or completely cut off from the community). This includes losing all contact with lifelong family and friends. All of these rules and laws are written into the Ordnung. The Amish have contributed to American culture by resisting the assimilation into the culture, giving us diversity within the system. They have stood their ground following their beliefs and not allowing the use of electronics of any kind and keeping to their faith in their god. They have also contributed to American culture with their rapidly growing population.
What are 2 specific examples of prejudice or discrimination that your selected ethnic group has experienced historically? Discussion includes a prejudice and a form of discrimination. Name, describe, and explain. Citation required.
1d. Body: Name and describe at least two specific examples of prejudice or discrimination that your selected ethnic group has experienced historically. In two main points label and identify the prejudices and/or name the forms of discrimination (for example: dual labor market, environmental justice issues, affirmative action, red lining, double jeopardy, institutional discrimination, reverse discrimination, glass ceiling, glass walls, glass escalator) that affected your group, or did it participate in the forms of discrimination.
At least 2 paragraphs, each contain 1 of 2 required main points that will be developed in the support paragraphs. Developing paragraphs, 50-70 words each; Factual information, accounts of events, that prove that your answer is a correct way to think. Citation required.
People of today’s society are very prejudiced of others not in their group. The Amish being one of those “less accepted” groups. One specific act of discrimination against the Amish people was when 8 Amish men refused to put safety signs on the back of their buggies, and were ultimately jailed for it. The buggies were not dangerous in any way and not impeding traffic because they were on a desolate dirt road. They were fined but in protest refused to pay stating that they had not broken any laws and the buggies were not a danger to anyone or anything. Because of the refusal to pay the fines, they then sentenced to a jail term. This is said to be an old religious dispute. There are also allegations against former Amish by current Amish people. For example, one former Amish woman tried to buy groceries at an Amish store and the clerk recognized her and in turn refused to serve the woman. This actually shows reverse discrimination against none Amish, or the previous (those who have been shunned, for whatever reason, or those who are no longer part of the “inner circle”. (citation: www.wbco.com)
The Amish have a very strict way of life and that shows in the case of the supermarket woman. In Amish society leaving the group and your family is considered mortal sin, it’s the ultimate bad karma and will get you kicked out of the community and forcing you to cut ties with everyone in the community and finding yourself mortally alone. This is traditionally put with not being able to shop at the same places you’ve always shopped at, not socializing with people you have known your whole life, and even never to see your family members again.
Does what you’ve learned about this ethnic group help you understand this group better? If not why? Explain how you will use this new information in your encounters within your communities (family, social, work etc).
1e. Conclusion, 50 words
I feel as if the research I have done on this group has truly enlightened my views and helped me to understand them a little better because I now know better how they live and why they do what they do and why they act how they do. Their religious beliefs are so engrained in them most of them don’t even know anything different and those that do, choose to live that life. I didn’t know all that much about the Amish before this but now I feel like I can more identify with them as far as their doing what they believe as I do the same thing.
2. 550-600 word essay on the religious group that you selected.
What is the name of the religious group and background that identifies the beliefs, worship practices, values and other forms of practice and other categories that will educate you about this religious group?
2a. Introductory paragraph, 50 words, includes an opening sentence, informational sentences, and closing sentence, which provides a smooth transition to the first body paragraph.
Hinduism is a unique system of beliefs, gods, and values. Almost every person could have personalized worship practices depending on which god they choose to worship, and there is no requirement on any amount of celestial beings needed to practice Hinduism. This religion has a plethora of gods, but all of them are based around the main triad; Brahman – the creator, Vishnu – the preserver, and Shiva – the destroyer or the transformer. Hinduism is also considered the “elder’ religion because no one is exactly sure when it was created or by whom.
What are the beliefs, worship practices, values, and other forms of practice and other categories that will educate you about this religious group? Requires citation.
2b. Body: Developing paragraphs, 50-70 words each, contain a topic sentence that states the main idea for the paragraph that will provide information in each area.
The traditions that lead to Hinduism go back a great distance in time, and the worship practices go back even further. Values and beliefs are thought to be taken from other religions and thrown together to create the melting pot called Hinduism. This was said to be the first religion to include reincarnation, the thought that if one is not released of all bad “karma” in the past life they would be forced to come back again until they could achieve Nirvana. The term Moksha in Hinduism means liberation from the circle of reincarnation, which is one of the highest values. To achieve this one has to identify the Atman 9the inner self) or the Sal (to be the same as the creator, Brahman.
Name and describe/explain 1 way the religious group you selected contributed to American culture?
2c. Body: least 2 paragraphs, first contains 1 required main point that will be developed in the support paragraphs. Developing paragraphs, 50-70 words each, contain a topic sentence that states the main idea for the paragraph that will describe the contribution for explanation.
Praying to the worshiped gods is one of the highest forms of spiritual worship practices. Hinduism, however also encourages people to practice tolerance of others beliefs because Hindu’s believe that “there is not only one correct understanding of the one true god” (www.wikipedia.org/wiki/hinduism). Worshipping is most often done in the warmth of one’s own home at a shrine built to one of the Deva’s (Deities) that exist in Hinduism and most consist of statues of these, candles, and religious cloths, they will usually include some type of chanting, humming, or singing mantras.
Hinduism has donated many values to the American culture; among those, being compassion towards those with other beliefs, the importance of non-violence, the belief that actions can come back to haunt you. So, be kind and have an overall respect for life and those around you. The reason I believe these benefit the overall public is because they promote open mindedness as a whole and community service through kind actions, treat others as you wish to be treated.

Karma has to be one of the biggest impacts on American culture, because often time’s people will say “Karma is a bitch!” or “That’s Karma for you!” showing that almost everyone has the basic idea of what Karma is. The fact that bad deeds get you bad luck in the future and in reverse good deeds bring you good luck. Americas popular religions are also drawing from this cultural influence of Hinduism because our religions are getting more accepting of others beliefs and more understanding of different lifestyles, because of one thing, really who are we to judge?
Prejudice is not uncommon in the Hindu religion, just like it isn’t in anything there are plenty of stereotypes. One of them is about the devotion to bovine, which is considered to be holy in Hinduism, as well as is the tradition of cremating their dead. Many anti-Hinduism activists also defile the gods to be evil and demonic and their teachings to be grotesque and horrid. Shiva has been taken as foul shapes and as shameless. Prejudice is not uncommon anywhere and these are just a few used by anti-Hindu’s.
Does what you’ve learned about this religious group help you understand this group better? If not, why? Explain how you will use this new information in your encounters within your communities (family, social, work etc).
2e. Conclusion, 50 words
I’ve known quite a bit about the Hindu religion and studying this aspect of it has really taught me a lot about their spiritual and worshipping beliefs, and also their values. Another form of discrimination against the Hindu religion include the crimes in the 1980’s “a Jersey City street gang calling themselves the ‘Dotbusters’ targeted, threatened, and even attacked the south Asians, Specifically Hindu’s” (www.wikipedia.org/wiki/hinduism) and there have been many other more recent attacks on Hindu’s by Muslim militants, the biggest being the “2006 Varanasi bombings”. But here is what I ask; why would you show hatred to a religion that promotes mostly peace?
3. 650 word essay that compares and contrasts prejudice and discrimination experiences for the religious and ethnic group selected for study in this assignment.
How is the prejudice experienced by your selected religious group and ethnic group similar? 2 similarities required for discussion in the body.

Although Hinduism and Amish are on completely different ends of the spectrum there are many commonalities between the two as well. Such as some of their strict religious customs. Both of these religious organizations have extremely strict rules as to how their patrons are allowed to dress. Also, the fact that they are minority groups with in communities. Some of the prejudices against them are similar as well. They are both hated for their personal views on their religions and their beliefs. Another similarity is in the way they live their lives, one is very secluded on distant dirt roads in small communities and the other though they may live in the middle of New York City, they are very private and solitude.

The Amish have a very strict set of rules to go along with their strict choice of life style, and as mentioned in the former essay you Are exiled if any of these rules or laws are disobeyed. Because of this many Amish groups / people are discriminated against because it is said that they are too harsh “harsh” and get accused of “cruel and unjust punishment”. This can apply to the Hindu as well, they have harsh punishments and what we call “strange” religious beliefs.
How is the prejudice experienced by your selected religious group and ethnic group different? 2 differences required for discussion in the body.
3c. Provide your one sentence thesis to give direction to your remaining 200-300 words in your answer. Introductory paragraph, 50 words, includes an opening sentence, informational sentences, and closing sentence, which provides a smooth transition to the first body paragraph. The thesis statement is contained in the introduction.
Both the Amish and the Hindu have very different lifestyles than we do. They get discriminated against for living the life that they were taught by their elders, and their elders taught them, and so on. In today’s society “different” is wrong, so therefore they get judged. The Amish have all there material (what little they have) possessions handmade, they have no power tools, nor electricity in which to run them. The Hindu’s take their religion so seriously that they have very few material possessions, most of their time and money is spent building very large and elaborate shrines in their homes to which they worship. Really this is no different than religions today, for example the Catholic, they spend millions of dollars on very large and elaborate churches.

There are many difference between these two groups as well, because they are in fact completely different groups of people.
They are discriminated against in very different ways. For example, the long beard and long ringlet curls in the men’s hair in the Amish community, this is normal for them and if for some reason you don’t or can’t grow it or it gets cut off you are likely to be shunned by the whole community until it all grows back. Most people in society today like the short hair and clean shaven face but with the Amish it quite the opposite. So, therefore they are judged and made fun of, called names, etc. With Hinduism, it’s just the opposite the men shave their heads and wear only robe type clothing. Because they look different they are judged and assumed to be “different”.
How is discrimination experienced by your selected religious group and ethnic group same? 2 similarities required for discussion in the body. 2 similarities required for discussion in the body.

logically.
The Amish pride themselves on being able to have the beard and a nice full head of hair, some hate crimes can include cutting an Amish mans bears or hair off. Which this in turn humiliates the person and can also get him thrown from his home and family until the hair grows back. They are shunned and then humiliated by their own people and family mambers.

Hinduism is essentially the same in the aspects that their punishments can be very harsh. If they do not dress the “appropriate” way they can be shunned in there mosks. They are often bullied and made fun of, especially the children because of the way they dress. The majority of the people ignore what they can of the discrimination, threats, name calling, and what not because they are following what they believe in their hearts and really don’t we all do that in some way or another? Really if you think about it aren’t we all different in many ways? Not a single one of us are exactly the same. God created us all as individual, different in one way or another.
How is the discrimination experienced by your selected religious group and ethnic group different? 2 differences required for discussion in the body.

Introductory paragraph, 50 words, includes an opening sentence, informational sentences, and closing sentence, which provides a smooth transition to the first body paragraph. The thesis statement is contained in the introduction.
Discrimination is the same no matter who you are or how you look at it. Whether it’s physically, mentally, emotionally, it’s no different than abuse, abuse is abuse no matter what angle you look at it. The Amish endure a lot of mental abuse due to how they dress and how they live. The hindu can endure the above as well as physical abuse. Some Hindu’s have been attacked and beaten because of how they look and dress.

What is your logical conclusion about discrimination that is supported by your new insight after studying these
groups?
3i. Conclusion 50 words: Based on your study and comparison of these groups draw a logical conclusion about discrimination that is supported by your new insight after studying these groups.
Discrimination isn’t just about being a different color, it’s about just being different. It’s being a different color, race, ethnic background, religion, or anything that another person considers weird or different can very easily be discriminated against, all of us, you or me, could be the next victim. These groups are discriminated against because they have set themselves apart from the “norm” in our society. I feel that we should appreciate the diversity of where we live and learn to not be so judgmental. The melting pot that we live in is part of what makes America, America. Everybody is human, we are all made up of DNA and cells. Our thoughts and views, our beliefs and how we dress should play no part or define us in the world, not just America but anywhere. In my opinion we should all come together as a common people as an equal human race and stop being judgmental. We all, as human beings, should take advantage of this great “melting pot” we live in and learn all we can from each other.
