Often when a person thinks of discrimination, they think of discrimination against different races, however, there are different types of discrimination that exists in our society, regardless of skin color, wealth or social status. There are different types of discrimination such as, race, religion, sexual orientation, height, weight and more (Dempsey pg. 197). There are no limits where discrimination takes place and unfortunately it can take place at the store, church, on the street and even in the work place.
Although there are many forms of discrimination that can occur in the workplace, women have to deal with discrimination in the workplace. When experiencing discrimination that workplace it is clear that discrimination based on gender is one the most concerning. One major cause for the lack of women in law enforcement is the kind of unnecessary physical testing police agencies use in hiring and women are less likely to as aggressive as or less intimidating than male applicants (Spillar). However, in a lawsuit filed in July of 2014, stated that police departments were suspected of using physical fitness test to determine hiring candidates, and yet the physical test that were being administered were not part of the police hiring process. In fact, no physical test was ever supposed to be part of the hiring process. Women can do perform that job as well as men and the physical test was designed to keep women off the police force (Spillar). A second major cause is where the police agencies tend to recruit new officers from gyms or on military bases, where more men than women can be found, versus looking at nurses, teachers or social workers. Getting rid of that type of method selecting recruits would bring in an increase of women officers
