England has had trouble with equality in the policing of laws, especially in London. Although many say it failed, London police instituted a mandatory anti-racism training for its officers (Webbe). A famous comedian, George Carlin, once said that there are two attributes that should be required for a police officer; intelligence and decency. Hiring someone onto the police force that needs anti-racism training may not be a wise decision especially if the police force is already experiencing race related issues. Even hiring police officers that are minorities doesn’t seem to help relive this problem. In Hyattsville, Maryland two African American officers were targeted by their own department after they spoke up about brutality and discrimination against minorities that they had witnessed (Constant). Even police that try to make a difference in the relationship between minorities and police can be put at…
Throughout the policing history of women and minorities they have struggled to be seen as equal in the law enforcement. Women have been forced to deal with discrimination within ranking and even overlooked for promotions that they were well qualified for.…
Social justice issues take place at various levels: global, national, regional, and local. The article, “The racist NYPD captain who ruined my career for not targeting enough blacks and Hispanics got promoted” by Raymond, surfaces the prevalent social justice issue of racism in America. Racism is holding prejudices on the basis of the race or color. Originating many years ago, the issue of racism is complex one because of its far-reaching effects and implications. It makes people feel inferior, creates a gap between the people of the society.…
This literature review analyzes the problem of underrepresentation of women in top executive positions in law enforcement in the state of Georgia. The study will provide an analysis of the gaps, trends and various occurring problems both in the past and currently regarding how African American Women have been underrepresented in law enforcement agencies. History of the Black women in these job positions will be addressed providing a comparison with their white women and men in general occupying these positions. Historical perspective will trace back these issues from the period of 1900. Also discussed is how diversity at the work place has affected AAW and their performance. Specific concern will be placed on how race and gender have been a hindering factor to their performance. A major issue that affects law enforcement agencies has been the glass ceiling and how over time has been used to hinder AAW at work place. The paper deeply analyzes challenges and various barriers that face women from obtaining promotions of executive positions in law enforcement.…

NYPD had a long history of reactive investigation of crime, controlled by a strong centralized organization with a top down culture. It lacked technology and methods needed to keep crime rates under control. There was low level of trust in the organization and sharing of information and resources was virtually nonexistent. Growing popularity of community policing was creating tensions between personal deployment strategies and those designed to deal with high crime areas. Public was restive, police force was demoralized and its performance was measured in terms of efforts rather than results. Fighting crime was low priority when compared to other mandates. Evidence also indicates discrepancies in pay at the same ranks and lack of coordination between units due to different reporting lines. Bratton had to undertake a major change initiative to fight crime, boost results and improve the organizational culture.…

In any field where your job is to provide a service to the public, it is important to have a basic understanding of the people you serve. The same is true for those who work in law enforcement, but because of the nature of their duties, it is an issue for serious concern. The multicultural shift in America means that there is more representation of various minority groups, all of whom have differing historic relations with those in law enforcement, and often times an unfavorable one. Whether these groups are newly represented in American society or have been part of the society for generations, most often there is a history of unfair or unequal treatment under the law that is difficult for parties on both sides of the issue to overcome. This lies at the core of the problems with police-community relations (PCR). In order to serve the public to the best of their abilities, those who 've taken the oath to do so need involvement from the community they represent, a community that seems to be ever…
Among police occupations, gender disparity has existed for centuries even though progress has been shown throughout past decades. Valiant efforts from women on all accounts have proven progress towards the goal. The fight and battle from women exemplify an end to gender disparity among police officers as statistics show headway into the equalization of the work force. From the beginning of the first sworn woman officer to 13% population of women among the force show progress through history. Media plays a massive role in the perception of women in the force due their representation. Changing attitudes of the male counterparts have been proven to help incorporate women into the field. In all, gender disparity exists through all work forces…
In taking my position on this matter, I looked at the questions presented and could easily tell how an answer could reveal someone’s personal views on a matter, therefore, placing them in a position to be discriminated against. For instance, there are questions asking about an individual’s beliefs that are in direct violation of the U.S. Department of Justice policy which states that the department itself tries to “eliminate discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, marital status, political affiliation, age or physical or mental handicap” (Bethel, 2013, p. 568). Since the Department of Homeland security is a federal agency, this type of questioning cannot occur. However, with such an…
“People of color have borne an outsize burden of this injustice, but it impacts every New Yorker and the safety of the city as a whole when entire communities are afraid of the very police force that is supposed to protect them. It is time to transform the culture of the NYPD, from one of heavy handed disrespect for some to one of dignity, respect and accountability for all, so that every New Yorker is treated fairly and all feel safe, secure, respected and protected,” (“NYCLU,” 2013, pg.…
Although police, who work in towns with high crime rates in relation to the African American population, have statistics to back their actions. Often there are circumstances where they profile an innocent young boy or girl. For example, if you are a young black man out late to go for a jog due to your busy schedule at work all day today, and you are suddenly harassed by multiple police officers, bombarding you with questions while simultaneously yanking your limbs into unnatural knots, you will feel that you have been profiled solely based on the color of your skin. Even knowing that approximately a block away from where you are jogging a suspect fled the sight of a violent mugging, this is a major problem. Given that the job of the police…
The paper will address the question or problem: Women police officers experience disparate treatment. The research will address and identify the social causes and effects of how the occurrence of disparate treatment of women officers correlates with discrimination, sexual harassment, advancement limits and retention problems. This…
We all know that there's a lot of racial profiling that happens in the police department but there's even one criminal profiling. In my opinion I think they come hand-in-hand because when you look at somebody only are you touching them by their appearance you're also taking them by the way they carry themselves. For example, if you grow up in a particular neighborhood where everyone's always yelling and fighting then people are going to think you were like that as well. All because you grew up in that neighborhood they write you off as being someone that's hostile. In reality just because you grab an area doesn't mean you're going to turn out like everyone else. There are many cases of people being written off as a no because their background.…
