Criterion (iii). The archaeological site of Tonina supplies unique and invaluable information about the end of the Mayan culture in the Classic period, it is considered the last great Mayan city, has distinctive historical, architectural and artistic values. The exceptional design of architecture, wall paintings, reliefs and stucco discovered in the area, disclose the organization of this society where war and religious aspects were fundamental.

This location has contributed to the excellent preservation of the buildings, wall paintings, sculptures, friezes and reliefs.
There is evidence of drawings and photographs from the late 19th and early 20th century on the site, that indicate well-conserved today.
In 1925 a detailed description and illustration of about 30 pre-Hispanic monuments were made, is the first mention of some sculptures of the site.
Research in Tonina was initiated in 1972 under the auspices of France government.

Authenticity
Since the 80’s a large number of new buildings have been discovered, new archaeological, historical, religious and linguistic data have been collected. So far the project has allowed to identify just over 200 buildings. In 1989 the Mural of the Four Ages or frieze of the lords of the dream was discovered. In 1992 the building known as the Palace of the Underworld was discovered.
