c. Got lost on the way—out of water and food, nearly died.
d. Bill discovered mural in looter’s trench.
2. San Bartolo contains the earliest Maya mural, and only the second
relatively complete Maya mural ever found. ~100 BC.
3. San Bartolo mural contains examples of Pre-‐Classic Maya script.
4. Earlier phase contains the earliest Maya text ever found ~300-‐250 BC.
B. Saturno brought in several other researchers:
1. Karl Taube – iconographer who discovered the Maya Maize God.
2. David Stuart-‐ epigrapher who reads Maya hieroglyphic script.
3. Heather Hurst – artist known for redrawing the other mural in Bonampak.
C. Mural depicts Olmec Maize God on Northern and Western walls.
1. Maize God is dressed by attendants, emerging from cave of sustenance (N wall).
