This report will investigate the contrast and similarities of the principles of regulation between a nurse and a social worker. The report will cover the aspects of professional practice between the two care sectors and discuss how specific registration, principles of the care professions, codes of conduct, professional development, clinical governance, ethical issues and professional boundaries compare and contrast with each other. It will also show important information in order to show understanding and knowledge of principles of professional practice.

The first is public service. This particular principle states that the employee should understand they have a role within the council to follow the rules to make sure they are providing the services to the public professionally and responsibly. Selflessness is an important principle which covers the responsibility of looking at the best interests of individuals and that the main focus is the client’s needs and not the employees. Next is the principle of integrity, giving employees an understanding of the importance of how they should not financially set events up which may be seen to benefit themselves. Another principle of the nine is objectivity. The principle gives the employee the understanding that they must make appropriate decisions whilst working with the public. Accountability and stewardship is the fifth principle on the list which makes employees aware that they are accountable their own decisions and actions while working in a public environment. The employee is expected to approach the public with openness, making sure the public understands their decisions and the relevance of the actions taking place. They must not restrict the public from information that is confidential to them and make sure they understand the circumstances before carrying it out. They say “The Code presents the professional standards that nurses and midwives must uphold in order to be registered to practise in the UK” (NMC, 2015). As reported by the (NMC, 2015), the code consists of 4 main points. These are to prioritise people, practice effectively, preserve safely and promote professionalism and trust. The code is said to give their employees an understanding of their “role” and “responsibility”.
For social service workers, there is 6 codes in their codes of conduct established by the SSSC. The SSSC (2009) states there codes are for workers to follow in order to professionalise their work sufficiently. It reminds employees of their responsibilities and accountabilities as part of their professional role. The code tells employees there is standards they must meet in order to stay registered. If the code is not followed correctly consequences will occur for the individual.
