Introduction
This assignment seeks to take an in depth look at a company named Below the Line Marketing or BTL Africa, it is a Zimbabwean marketing company that offers below the line marketing services to any other firms or individuals that seek to use their services. I interned at this company over the summer of 2012 during the months of May - August
The organization is small and employs only 10 office staff that work for the company full time. When the need to do below the line marketing activities such as in store promotions and road shows, the company has over 100 part time employees on retainer that are paid for the number of days which they have worked and have no steady salary. The amount they are paid varies from job to job. The company is run by two directors namely, Vimbai and Themba they founded the company two years ago and have been growing it ever since. The company mainly employs young adults who have just graduated from university thus making the average age of the company somewhere between 28 and 27 years of age.
As the organization is so small, there is a short chain of command for the permanent workers with orders coming directly from the directors and very little room for delegation as everyone is more or less at the same level of authority. However when it comes to delegating tasks to the outsourced workers, the chain of command grows a little longer, the companies directors receive a request from a company seeking their services, then the directors pass on this task to the in-office workers, who’s task it is to then find, allocate and delegate work to the non permanent workers, these non permanent workers report directly to the in office staff and have little or no communication with the directors, very similar to larger firms.
