One of the major agencies is the Bureau of Indian Affairs, founded in 1775. Out of the 45 commissioners of the BIA, only six have been Native American. And the last Native commissioner in office was Red Lake Chippewa in 1981 (Bia.gov). Another cause of the problems is the lack of representation within the government. It's fairly easy to connect the dots and see that not much has changed for the natives. The severity of the problems has changed, but they are always constant. This tragic past is what makes it so disheartening to learn about new and abundant struggles within the education system. The problems include dilapidated infrastructures and limited resources reflect the native test scores and grad statistics. And to be clear these issues and numbers do not come from all Native American students, these come from schools that operate under the Bureau of Indian Education. The BIE is a branch of the BIA, that specifies in education on the reservation. There are numerous reservations dispersed throughout the northwest and southwest. The locations of these reservations are total extremes. For instance, the Chippewa reservation is on the border of Canada, and the Navajo reservation is smack in the middle of the Arizona desert. Education is the strong foundation of every great power, and to deny US citizens education, would be to limit the US’s potential. The problems on the reservation start with the bureaucracy of the US government and require help. Reservations are all a Native student may have ever known and sending them to a foreign school where they can ridicule, while the non-native ran agencies sit back. The US government has detected and mistreated the Native Americans for too long. And this time they are attacking a cultures youth, by not educating them properly. Not educating an ethnicity properly sounds a lot like separate but not equal, don't repeat the past.
