Process and Natural Foods
A process is an organized series of steps to do something well. Processing enables the continual availability of foods that have limited growing seasons hence additives, preservatives and colouring are added in order for continuous availability. Natural foods are food that does not contain any additives, such as preservatives or artificial colouring it remains in its natural state and is not continuous all year long. When deciding to purchase natural or process food there are three things one must take into consideration three factors the availability, economics and health.
The availability of process and natural food varies as it relates to season and accessibility.
Processed foods enable the year round availability of foods that would normally be seasonal and also extend the shelf life of foods. Food processing makes many foods available that we would normally eat once per year. Without the availability of processing we certainly would not have the large variety of food and products we see on supermarket and store shelves, however natural foods are not easily accessible throughout the year as they are seasonal and have a short shelf life, hence when natural foods are in season one should partake as much as possible base on its availability. Therefore one has to consume while it is available.
Economics consist of cost and value for money.
Processed foods are considered to be more expensive at it relates to the processes it has to go through and the many preservatives which are added for continuous availability however natural foods are cheaper since there is no method of processing and additives to keep the food natural. One would want to ensure that they are getting value for their money as it relates to process foods the vitamins and minerals which are added cannot suffice for the nutrients that the body needs wherefore one has to take added supplements to ensure the body get the proper nutrients it need.     Wow! That’s a huge question, since there are many types of food. I believe fresh fruits and vegetables are harvested in bulk from farms, orchards, vineyards, etc., and then go through facilities that handle the cleaning, sorting, packaging (for fresh), and canning. Milk originates at dairy farms and either gets bottled there, or shipped in bulk to facilities that process it into many forms, some of these forms winding up in other processed foods. I’m not sure if butter, cheese, yogurt and the like are done at or outside of the dairy. I know that beef and pork now usually comes from processing “farms” rather than real farms or ranches. It passes through facilities for either minimal processing to pass on fresh to markets and meat stores, or for full processing and packaging. Chicken and eggs come from facilities that are more like factories than farms. Bulk grains from farms goes through extensive processing at facilities, winding up in an endless variety of forms and products. I guess just about everything gets some type of processing through factories, plants, and other facilities before it is offered to the consumer.…

    How these processed foods manage to creep into our diet can be traced back to the industrialization. Industrialization moved fruits and vegetables to the side in favor of processed meats, more sugar and more fat. Along with the industrialization came Nutrionism, or essentially reducing foods into objects with nutrients. Looking at foods for their quantity of nutrients causes the distinction between whole foods and processed foods to disappear: leading the way for when “ ‘even processed foods may be considered to be ‘healthier’ for you than whole foods if they contain the appropriate quantities of some nutrients’ “(Pollan 32).     In my own words I would describe ‘natural foods’ as foods that are literally by definition, natural. Not processed, no chemicals, additives, and any other elements to produce the food. The natural foods market as a whole includes “natural” products, including “sustainably developed,” “grown under fair trade,” and “green friendly, which all form the definition of ‘natural foods’. When interpreting ‘natural foods’ with the above definition, I would conclude it to be a very good business definition. The opportunity offered by natural foods is endless in terms of business. Based on a market research, there is great motivation in purchases of natural products including: 66% health/nutrition, 38% taste, 30% food safety, 26% environment, and 16% availability. For organic food producers, their acreage grew significantly due to the high demand of these organic products and to take advantage of higher margins. Natural product producers benefitted versus a convention chemical-intensive system because of the price premiums and greater profits. Manufacturers and distributers of natural products need to develop specific and distinctive pipelines in order to maintain organic integrity through the distribution chain. Organic foods are more perishable than conventional foods so they require faster and more careful handling. The competition is slight in this regard, due to the specifics of organic product distribution offering more to the distributer. Retailers are offered the opportunity to sell these natural products which provides them with something people want.     In this book, Pollan provides practical steps a person wants to to eat right should take. Pollan has one main point in this manual that is restated in countless different ways. His main argument is that processed foods are destructive to ones health.
